I have just bought a new 3Com switch I have tried linking it from an exsisting switch but when I plug users in to the switch their network performance is poor. What port is the uplink port on a 3Com switch and is there anything else that could be affecting the performance.

You may wish to read the duplex FAQ, mismacthed Duplex often causes pings to work fine, but very poor throughput.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

You may also have a loop. Is the switch running STP? How are you connected to the switch (what is the backbone)? Is this a managed switch?
