This is totally beyond me so thought I'd come somewhere for help. I'm trying to use a 3Com PCMCIA etherlink III LAN card on a Toshiba Satellite 300cds laptop. The device is detected by win98 and installs the drivers seemingly correctly and says the card is working correctly. I've configured the TCP/IP settings in Control Panel-> Networks for the card in the same way as my Desktop PCs are setup and that seems ok. BUT the card doesn't seem to get initialized, i.e. it isn't listed if i run ipconfig. I've looked everywhere for any information and not come across anything, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Do any of the connection lights come on?
Can you ping another IP address?
Can you ping the laptops IP address from another computer on the network?

Conection lights come on, on both the switch and the PC card. Can't ping or be pinged.

Are you sure that all your configuration is set correctly in the TCP/IP properties?
Have you put the gateway in & set up DNS correctly?
Have you changed the network lead for one that you know is OK?
Can you try the network card in another laptop?
When I type ipconfig I get two ethernet addapters listed, not by name just by number (0 & 1)
0 is empty & 1 has the correct IP address, subnet mask & default gateway.

All the config is correct, naturally thats the first thing i checked.

I'm using the dongle that came with the card as card has a specific adapter at the card end. At the minute i don't have access to another laptop but i'm working on it.

If you type

ipconfig /all

You should get the device names, the first probably a ppp adapter. I get two ppp adapters listed but not the PCMCIA card. On this machine i get the same except i get my ethernet card listed.

I don't suppose you have access to another PCMCIA network card. If you had you could try swapping it over.
I know this sounds obvious, but have you changed the network lead & got the latest driver from the 3com website?

I've spoke to the fella i got the card off and he thinks its a dud. I've tried it on another machine running XP and the device manager says it can't start the device. I did have the latest drivers but they were pretty old anyhow. Hopefully the new one will work when it arrives. Thanks for your help anyway.

I did wonder if this was a dud, thats why I suggested another laptop. Anyway, good luck with the new card. Hope it works OK.
