Hi all. Trying to port trunk two 3Com 3300 XM switches, using two lines, Port 3 to Port 3 and port 15 to port 15, etc. The status says inactive, I have no lights on the switches paels indicating any connection, and I'm using standard patch cables, because the crappy user's guide really says nothing about any of that.

What am I doing wrong?

Regards,

Davige

Your cables will need to be cross over cables. Is that what your using?

No, I used normal patch cable. I did try using one cross over cable to see what whot happen, and suddenly both switches froze up; all lights were solid and on! I figure I must have created a broadcast storm or something. I did everything the manual specifed, thought I only had one cross over cable at the time. I set the port up through the serial web manager.

Any helpful clues? Thx.

By the sounds of it you did somehow create a loop. You will need 2 Cross over cables and if spanning tree protocol is disabled don't plug both cables in until you are sure the trunks have initialised..

Have you set the switches with static IP's? If so you can web browse to them and the process is much easier.

What I would do is remove any trunks you have setup and start again with only 1 Cable connected.

Thx for your input.

I don't believe I have SPT running, but I will check. how does one know thr trunks are initialized? When I check status, they usually say inactive (this is of course using normal patch cables).

I don't have a static IP set fro the switches, I try to use the default one but it does not work for me, though I set the remote option in the switches. As you may know by now, I am new to these switches, so any details you give are most helpful, and thx for your time thus far.
