I've just accuired an old IBM PS/2 and was thinking of putting Red Hat 5.2 on it. I was wondering if anybody has or has seen it running on a 386 with x and everything. How does it perform?
Forget X on a 386. I would say that minumum for X is 486SX (done it on a 486SX33, 512K VGA 8Mb Ram).
I have managed slakware (older distribution) on a 4Mb 40MbHD 386SX16. No fancy stuff. just enough to get it to boot and use as a terminal. If you plan on trying with a machine with less than 8Mb, you'll have to do plenty of RTFMing on low memory installs.
Yeah, I figured x would be useless but my main concern is the MCA bus. I can't find anything that says yea or nay. Sounds like I should leave Windows 3.1 on it. Thanks!
