I have an opportunity to acquire a 3640 router with a couple of network modules (ethernet and fast ethernet are there, WIC-1ADSL not installed but there are open WIC slots). There are several of these routers available. Some have 12.3(1a) or greater 12.3 IOS. A couple of 12.2(xx) or lower. A couple of others have IOS 12.4. All seem less expensive than a 2621 or 2651.

Are these reasonable for home use (back-up for an 877) and to maybe *slowly* work toward a CCNA, or is this like taking driver's ed in a Boeing 757?

What is the minimum IOS is should look for when shopping for a Cisco router? Are there other components I should acquire?

Looks like you will need a different NM module, Bill! Sorry!

Yes Google is your friend.. Just ask Johnny.ihackstuff!

I currently have a Juniper box as my net device but really want to buy an 871W eventually! A lot like the 877! Then I can play with NAT in a real-world environment to my hearts content!

It will be like a production environment actually! I can experience first hand what angry users with no internet will be like... just play with NAT and ACLs while the wifey is surfing the web! LoL

...and no-one ever heard from maczen again

Billy,

I was over at the Cisco DSLreports forum early this month and they were saying to wait for the "new" - I think it is a Cisco 971W to replace the Cisco 87X routers, they were being beta tested as we speak and should be out any day.

Burt,
I will read your link - no trouble - I just posted what Cisco says should work with them - no extra research :)

Thanks Gene! I will keep my eye out for them!

Thanks for the info!!

I think the best path for now is to configure the 3640 to just work with the AT&T Motorola modem. At my level, that will be challenge enough. For now.

I'm sure I'm be posting a few questions on the router forum. Might come here for some config help as well as long as nobody minds a few cross-posts.

eBay might provide an option or two in the future. Looks like there are several NM with FE that will need to be monitored on eBAy.

FYI....

If anybody's interested, there were a couple of 3640s listed this afternoon as a "buy it now" for $65 each + shipping from NW Arkansas. I'm thinking about it since I could take a day to pick them up and save shipping. But if somebody else needs them, go for it.

Thanks Silver,
I have three 3640's at the moment which will suffice! My next routers are 18xx's, 28xx's and apparently a 971W!

Billy,

It is a Cisco 891W - here is what was said by someone who is "in the loop" with Cisco - "Good for going with the 881. Either the 881 or 891 are the future (and more like these two series will be seen), completely different architecture than any past 800 or 1800 series, more features and functionality."

Looks to be what you are looking for!!!!

hey silver..got a link for those routers? I'm curious how bad shipping might be to get them to me.

Thanks, shipping isn't too bad on them, just saving the sellers store for when I'm needing to expand my home lab again.

Annie Thyme.

I'm keeping my eyes open as well, particularly on that vendor. Though its a pretty long haul, it would be cheaper to make the trip than to pay for shipping.

Hi ho, silver, away....

Looks like you'll need to "borrow" a decent IOS from Mac!

Burt

Perhaps! LoL

Thanks for the link Gene! Will keep my eyes open for the 881 and 891 routers! Will make a good home router and replacement for the Juniper NS-5GT! Have even been considering running two separate ISPs (cable and DSL) just to have something to play with (plus I can put my family in one and my network in the other.. it will be a pretty one-sided conversation).. Just ask Buirt about the plethora of MySpace attacks I have been seeing in the logs! Tell the family to avoid those MySpace games.. LoL

I have 135 IPS signatures loaded, among other things...good luck!

Burt

'Other things"? Hopefully not the new CISCO EOS software. You know how I fear MySpace and FaceBook and the like! LoL

I will play around with it soon Tim! Have been very busy at work. Plus I'm still a newbie.. LoL Still, this may be a lot of fun! Hacking away all day to no avail! LoL

Just use your NMAP book...that dude's kind of a decent hacker...I mean, he's no Mitnik...lol
And what is EOS? I'll have to Google that...

Burt

Router is up and running with Fastethernet0/0 and Ethernet1/0. I'll start setting up a config tomorrow. I'm going to use a working running config from an 831 as a guide to use the router with a Motorola DSL modem provided by AT&T.

But I have a different project we're working on. Details will be on the news within a few days. I'll provide the link when its up and running.
