Hello, I am trying to save some bucks on a switch for my home lab. I am wondering what are the main differences between 2912xl and a 3500 series cat switch, I know i can trunk on each and they both run ios, does 3500 series have room for a rsm? i'm thinking that could be the diff that 2912 may only have 2 mods for gbic connectors. thanks

The 3500xl has 2 GBIC slots, 10Gbps backplane.
2900xl has no GBICs (unless a 2924m with additional module) and 3.3Gbps backplane. Unless you need gigabit the 2900 is fine for a home study lab.

Specifically, 3550 can perform L3 routing but 29xx can't (except 2948G-L3).
