I have acquired two Cisco 3500 XL switches with 48 10/100 ports and two Gigabit fiber GBICS. When I try to put in our fiber connection to the next floor nothing happens. I did have to reset these switches to factory default. Is there a setting that I need to do in order for these GBICS to start transmitting data?

I'll try that, one more question are agency uses 100base-FX fiber. Is the Cisco 3500 XL 1000 base-SX compatible with the 100 base fiber?

I don't think FX is compatible to work with SX, but I could be wrong, in which case I'm sure someone will let me know...lol

I just had an idea, would the reason that my new switch's fiber port would not be working would because the new switch which is 1000base-sx is talking to a switch downstairs which is using 100base fx?

The Gigabit interfaces on the 3500XL can only operate at 1Gbps so they are not compatible with 100BaseFX. Depending on the GBIC installed they are compatible with 1000BaseSX, 1000BaseLX/LH, 1000BaseZX and 1000BaseT.

I have got to configure a separate Vlan on the port for GBIC for connectivity to an ISP pls I will like to know the specific config . I know I can configure Vlan and which other step do i need to take in both side . got 2 catalyst 3750 at difreent site to be connect to a fibre cable.

Well, the first step would be to start your own thread...
