3300 Vmail to Email on Hosted Email service

Does anyone know if the 3300 will have the ability to send to a hosted email anytime soon?

The SX200 has had this ability for years and it's starting to grate on my nerves.

Not sure what you mean by hosted e-mail service? Something like gmail? I'm pretty sure I had the embedded vm sending to my gmail once apon a time, but then memory could be failing me in my declining years

The single biggest problem with communications is the illusion that it has taken place.

Yes hosted email outside the corporation where a username and passcode are required. The SX200 can do this. The 3300, does not.

There should not be a problem. You need username and password if you use SMTP service to send emails out to external domains. If you need to send all the emails to the same domain then pick any relay responsible for it and send all emails to it
run in windows cmd console
nslookup -q=mx <yourdomain.com>

It should give you a list of available servers

slapin - As far as I know, there is no way to authenticate to an external SMTP service using the 3300. No username and password field.

The 3300 only has the ability to define the address of the SMTP server. Unless said SMTP server will allow anonymous forwarding of email then everything dies right there and then. I have a customer using Gmail. I have no way to send their voicemails to them via SMTP.

If there is a way, be specific, educate me.

I believe slapin is suggesting that for gmail.com, you would do:

nslookup -q=mx gmail.com

pick out:

gmail.com mail exchanger = 40 alt4.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.
gmail.com mail exchanger = 5 gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.
gmail.com mail exchanger = 10 alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.
gmail.com mail exchanger = 20 alt2.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.
gmail.com mail exchanger = 30 alt3.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.

and enter one of:
gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com
or:
alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com
etc

as the SMTP server on the Mitel 3300

this will only then allow the Mitel to send to google hosted email addresses/domains (and if Google change those MX records it might stop working)

lastly, the Mitel may trigger spam detection on the google side if it sends as EXTENSION@IPADDRESS

for example:

Log Type: Software
Log Number: 4519
Severity: Warning
Date: 2009/Nov/13
Time: 11:15:42
Source: VPIM
Description: CSMTPClientMsg::processMessage - Email Server may require a Domain Name in order for it to deliver this message: From: 2477@10.10.10.1 Message: V4afd3fdd.02f.
Module: Main
File Name and Line Number: ipvm_smtpclientmsg.cpp;1033

solution is to add an entry to:
Networked VM Servers

for us:

System Administration
Voicemail
Networked VM Servers
was empty, Add:
Network Element Name: as appropriate
Network Element Type: 3300 (default)
Local: ticked it
Cluster: left unticked
PNI: left empty
IP Address: entered Mitel's IP: 10.10.10.1
DNS Name: entered customername.co.uk
Time Zone: defaults to: GMT -04:00, changed to: GMT
Comment: left empty

Download a free SMTP server and relay the messages to Gmail on the correct ports incoming Port: 110 and outgoing Port: 465 or 587.

voipin, I like your Idea best so far.

Fissure, Your details help quite a bit.

Just so that I am clear and in my own language.

I can try 1 of the 5 examples you've provided as my SMTP server entry in the 3300 or try the command nslookup -q=mx gmail.com from the customers site and try any additional options that may appear. FYI, I do not get those entries when I submit that command from my PC.

Additionally, I should set up the Networked VM Server form with appropriate values to send a FQN instead of the mitel default.

Doesn't sound too hard. I'll give it a try and see how it goes.

Hi kwbMitel, I would have expected most people to get much the same response to:

nslookup -q=mx gmail.com

or:

nslookup -q=mx gmail.com | find "MX"

(which would show you just the bits we need)

it is possible that depending where you are (geographically) Google may give you different answers, but, as it stands I'd expect you to be able to use: gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com wherever you are in the world (to send mail to Google addresses)

good luck!

Fissure,
Not having played with this at all, it would appear that for this to work all users would have to have accounts on the same domain. ie. gmail.com or <mydomain>. Is that true?

I'm thinking if I needed to send out to different domains I would have to build an internal relay such as kwbMitel suggested.

Am I on the right track?

Dry Aquaman

Hello dryaquaman, yes, this is correct (if you looked up the MX record for gmail.com, and had the Mitel send direct to one of those, the Mitel would only be able to email addresses/domains which Google handled the email for)

Another option, if the customer's Internet Service Provider has an SMTP server/smarthost for their customers to use, then the Mitel should be able to send to it (and it will then send the mail on to any domain/recipient)

the following (possibly out of date, and UK centric) lists mail servers for various ISPs:

I'm currently trying the same and my hosted e-mail provider will not do smtp relay for our domain? so i have been looking at options? will the free smtp work for me?

It should work. Otherwise you would not be able to to send any emails anywhere. SMTP relay will accept email from any source if destination is the domain it is serving. You can send email anywhere in the world straight from your mail client, the only inconvenience that you have to change SMTP server manually for every destination. The spam filter can be an issue, because SMTP client implementation in ICP is not the best in the world.

Tested and it worked for me.

when you say program
gmail-smtp-in.l.google.comor:alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.cometc
as the smtp server on the 3300, what are you refering to.
i have looked all through my 3300 and theres is not a smtp form or reference to it any where. i searched mcd 4.1 tech handbook with no luck. im just not sure where to enter this value

It's in the System Options Form

thanks kwbMitel. ok its just the email server entry in system options.i have this....gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com entered in the form but keep getting this error in my logs.

does your Mitel have a default gateway (and DNS) set correctly?

the 255.255.255.255 in:
Connect socket of <192.168.0.3> to server <255.255.255.255> failed: errno <13>
is odd

ultimately, the:
From Vpim: 1001@nsc.internal
may also cause problems you might need a proper domain name to show there

I have this note from before about entering a domain:
"You have to configure Networked VM Servers form;

The network element MUSt match your ICP name.
Network element type is your ICP (for embedded one) which is local VM
DNS name is name wich is used in E-mail

I think a reboot is necessary...
