Quick Question

Anybody performed an on-line upgrade rather than off-line upgrade of any version / persuations.... Conducted Off site across broadband connection or on site??

I have a client that is asking to upgrade a CX at a remote site (MCD4.0sp3 to MCD4.1sp2), without visiting the site.

Experiences, pitfalls, recommendations would be appreciated.

Remote site is standalone system, no ENT/OPS Mgr or clustering involved. Connected to company private IPWAN for remote management.

Hi,

I did a similar upgrade a few weeks ago - one on site and the other off site. Don't count on the 'online' upgrade being online for very long (it might be ok, but I didn't make a note of how long all the handsets were down for).

Allow plenty of time. The onsite upgrade took 41 minutes from clicking the start button to all handsets being back in service. The offsite upgrade took around 1 hour 32 minutes and that was over a 2Mbps link that has bandwidth limiting on it, so I'm not sure of the actual throughput - it was definitely less than 2Mbps though.

In short, my experience of upgrading over a WAN link was good, just time consuming.

Good luck.

Thanks MitaiMart

Yep wondered if handsets would remain on line all thru the entire process, considering at some point firmware updates are to be pushed out to each device.

Good to know that it actually works.....

If performing any upgrade remotely I would recommend running the MCD installer and FTP from a PC local to the controller.
If you use RDP to that PC and run it, if you lose your connection for any reason the local PC will still keep running and will certainly be much quicker than running over a WAN/VPN/internet

Forgot to add on-line upgrade installs the software on the inactive partition of the system so if there is a problem you can quickly resume your last working configuration by simply using the SWAP command from the maintenance commands

Thanks Supernova99

Was hopeful that I could rtp/vpn to local desktop loaded with software installer, Mitel SW, FTP server and putty, rather than performing across the WAN. Waiting on confirmation from client, before I consider even attempting upgrade.

Your right never try full install remotely, upgrade path is the only safe option......Have had to use the swap command before to save my neck, when upgrade had apparently succeeded but strange issues occurred with DB.

cheers

I use managed power strips and com2telnet adaptors attached to the maintenance port of 3300, so I can reset

Sets are stay connected all the way till new software activation, which is effectively a reboot. So you will have about 15 minuted system downtime. It will include possible 3300 bootrom upgrade, DSP upgrade, system software startup and if you have over 50 phones it will take some time for phones to get new software if you use TFTP and DHCP from the controller.
