It has always backed up successfully until about a month ago. Nothing changed that I'm aware of. My backup location is C:\3300_ICP.tar. The backup seems to run, and my Java console launches, but the I get a popup that says "Backup fail", followed by "Unable to transfer due to backup failure".

You can't fix stupid, you can only work around it.

Are you backing up voicemail as well, if so try it without.
There was a bulletin written about Browser timeout some while back, if it works with out the voicemail then you need to adjust this timeout

I am not backing up Voicemail or Call history records

It is. Just to make sure 9becauseI'm also running Win7) I went to an XP machine with IE7. Same failure.

Done. Same issue.

I know one time when I was trying to make a back up of a system, and it failed every time... there was a voicemail port that was stuck open.

This in turn locked the voicemail and the back would fail till the voicemail port was unlocked.

Find out the port numbers for the voicemail and do a status check, if there are open ports, manually disable and re-enable the ports.

This might be your issue...

Certificate issue? Did you import the proper certificate?

Also, the backup is done with a java tool. I find with my laptop security settings that when I try a backup for the first time, I have a pop up bar that asks if I want to allow. I say yes, then I have to restart my IE session and try again.

If you did not take enough time to get it right the first time...

What makes you think that you have time to fix it?

If all else fails, try a reboot of the system.

This back up error might be something internal, and a reboot can fix it?

But Paterson's and every else's responses are correct, the pre- reboot of the system, since you stated that nothing has changed.

The system has been rebooted since this error began. I will make time to test the previous 2 responses.

Hmmmmm well if you rebooted the system, the voicemail ports would have unlocked themselves upon the re-boot.

Then that takes one item off my list. ;-)

Have you looked at the logs?

They tell you why the back up failed...

Oh -or- has the Firewall on your computer been enabled recently?
I know that if I turn mine on the back-ups will fail too.

Log into the rtc shell and watch the backup process as it occurs, it will give you a better indication where/when things fail.
