32bit vs 64bit

i'm sure this was a debate earlier on but I really wanna know why 64bits is better? and actually, what does this specifically mean in terms of how a CPU handles things? Does it do things 32 bits at a time? or for a 64bit CPU, 64 bits at a time?
 
64 bits is twice as big so you need a bigger fan and maybe a case too.
 
The main demand for 64-bit was due to the memory limitation of 32-bit which is restricted to a max of 4GB. Once 64-bit OS's & software come into play, then we'll start to see the real advantages of having such a CPU. Until then, the guts & glory only exist in news articles and supercomputers.
