Hey all

I'm sure one of you guys will know, are there any issues (other then loss of speed) for putting a SCSI 320 hard drive on a 160 bus?

TIA :)

yea, the speed loss is a waste, i'm not in a position to replace the card just yet with a faster one in the mean time I want to add more storage space.

lol, that was the plan, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to wreck anything with my current setup.

and no matter what I do .. the seagate tries to become part of my raid 5 .. i'm not sure why .. but now that i've removed it .. it says my raid 5 is degraded :( and the original drive which was always there and hasn't changed has failed :|

A drive which was optimal before installing the seagate..

Shmoes,

Don't know what SCSI card you have (Adaptec??) but an added drive to the same bus will be picked up buy the array. As you have removed it, your degraded status can be corrected by repairing/rebuilding the array.

If you card has more than one channel, you can keep this drive discreet by installing on the separate channel.

I have an adaptec 2110S and it has a single bus, I do have a "rebuild" option, but i've never done it before and I was a little hesitant (or scared would be better put) .. what happens to the data already on that drive, and am I currently using that drive? or am I currently only working on two drives?

Why would it just assume to replace a disk in the array when that array is complete and optimal?

~Shmoes

Shmoes,

but now that i've removed it
Clarify, you stated that you removed it so you should not be "using" it.

yes, I have removed the 6th drive at this point.

I have two arrays

A mirror (2 drives)
A raid 5 (3 drives)

Both were running optimally

I added a 6th drive, the segate just to be on it's own and not part of the raids and it took the place of the 5th (ID4) drive .. even tho at that time the drive was still there. I removed the 6th drive and it redetected the 5th one but said it's degraded, and that drive failed.

Shmoes,

Check your "adaptec BIOS configruation", what you describe should not be happening. Also, double check the SCSI ID's of all connected devices if only for insurance.
