What are the advantages of 64-bit over 32-bit? Does DB2 support 64-bit architectures for Windows or Linux? Can someone refer me to some educational material?

Thank you,

Sam,

64bit systems have a lot to offer for Database servers. The biggest benefit is memory availability and scalability. Most 32-bit systems are limited to 4GBs of memory. 64bit servers do not have this limitation.

DB2 is available for Linux on several 64bit platforms. For Windows the options are Itanium or AMD64/Intel EM-64T based systems. The new AMD64/EM64T based systems are the low cost option. Windows is available in beta for this platform and DB2 has a beta as well (
