We are getting ready to add a 2nd frontend server to our sharepoint farm. My question is what do I do about the server functions (index, search and job) that sharepoint has on the front end servers? Do you leave them all on one server? How do you transfer a function if a server goes down?

Any input here would be much appreciated.

Thanks

What service is running on the frontend side?
cos the Full text search (WSS) and SPTimer service run on the database end...

Aren't the index, job and search functions controlled from the front end?

Well i just rechecked this on my own setup, the Search engine (for WSS) runs in the database the full text search engine its based on indexing server (but its not indexing server :p).

But you are right about the SharePoint timer service (for sending alert mails an such) this does run on the front end. But i suspect you just keep it running on both front ends.

Good point. I appreciate your help!
