I am trying to install a 2nd hdd into my IBM Netvista to use as a small backup drive. I took it out of another machine that I don't use anymore. The IBM has the following:
P4, 2.3 Gig, 768MB with the latest BIOS update.
I have changed the jumpers to reflect master and slave as per the diagrams on the drives and connected the IDE cable correctly. When I boot up and go into the BIOS I see the following in the device listing:

IDE Drive 0:
Type: size of the drive
IDE Performance: High Performance
IDE Read Prefetch: Disabled

IDE Drive 1:
Type: not installed
IDE Performance: High Performance
IDE Read Prefetch: Disabled

IDE Drive 2:
Type: CD /DVD-ROM
IDE Performance: High Performance
IDE Read Prefetch: Disabled

IDE Drive 2:
Type: CD /DVD-ROM
IDE Performance: High Performance
IDE Read Prefetch: Disabled

In IDE Drive 0: the BIOS shows the size of the 2nd hdd but it won't boot (naturally). When I remove the cables from the 2nd hdd IDE Drive 0: indicated the 1st hdd and boots properly.
I then changed the jumpers to cable select on both drives and IDE Drive 0: shows the 2nd hdd and IDE Drive 1: doesn’t show anything for Type (the line is not there) but the performance and the read Prefetch lines are. Again, the machine won't boot, it just sits there at the IBM screen.
I have never tried this before and don’t have much experience with the BIOS other than updating it.
Any suggestions here? Thanks in advance.

Check your jum
per settings again.
The fact that it takes on the master position tells me the jumpers are not set correctly.
Set the original drive from the Netvista to master, and the old drive to slave. Some bios won't detect drives on boot up, but rather use the info they already have. So you need to go into the Bios and tell it to detect them.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Jumpers are set as per diagrams on the drives. Tried frist as Master and slave and then aboth as cable select. The end cable connector is on the master drive, middle on on the slave.
The only thing i have done with the BIOS in teh past is update it and set the boot order. I haven't seen anything that tells it to look for additional drives. Can you give me a idea of what I should be looking for in the BIOS to have it detect the drives and their order
Thanks.

Hmmm, never thought of that... it works.
Boy it utterly amazes me how one can tend to overlook the simple things in life...
Thanks

In electronics, if it ain't broke, don't fix it... in computers, if it ain't broke, it probably isn't turned on.

Yeah man, little things like that can be the one thing wrong. I've learned to check every last piece.
