I am trying to set up an additional domain controller in my domain. The first is running Windows 2003 Enterprise with all the updates. The 2nd is running Windows 2003 R2 with all the updates. When I try to set up active directory on the 2nd computer, I get a "forest not prepared, run adprep..." error. I have already done this in the past but went to the domain controller and ran adprep for the domain and forest. It says it is already done and does not run it again. Why am I getting this message? Any suggestions on what to do?

Thanks in advance,

Shannan

Did you run adprep for the R2 upgrade? This requires a schema update. Running adprep/forestprep/domainprep from the Win2k3 (non R2) is not sufficient.

Did you run adprep from the 2nd R2 disc?? That's the one with the schema updates for r2

I try to run it from the R2 box but it says it is not a domain controller. I can't install AD without it. Suggestions?

Thanks - Shannan

Run adprep /forestprep /domainprep from the 2nd CD of the R2 media on your current 2k3 enterprise domain controller.

make sure you run the update on your current infrastructure domain controller. That should work for you.

If it would be the 2nd DC, the first IS the infrastructure master :)

I was running it from CD-1, not CD-2. I will try and see what happens.

You must use CD2 from the R2 set, and you must run it from the schema master, while logged on with a user account that's a member of the schema administrators group.

That did the trick. Thanks for your help!
