I am looking into buying TS CALS for remote access to one of our applications. However we only have windows 2000 servers as of right now. We will be upgrading in the near future.

If I buy the Windows 2003 TS Cals can i get them to work in a 2000 enviornment? I can't seem to find any 2000 TS cals for sale?

Thanks

Nick

Had the same situation. Called MS TS support, at first they said it could not be done, on a second call I got a tech who added a registry setting to get it to work ( free call).
Do yourself a favor, call MS first before purchase, the TS support is responsive.
Good luck

What are the client OS's? If they're W2KPro and XP, it doesn't matter for now as they have "free" licenses to use TS.

Dave,

Your telling me that I don't need TS CALS if my TS Server is 2000 and my clients are XP?

Correct. They use the free "built-in" CAL's for W2KPro and XP clients.

Ok... does the same go for XP Home Machines?

Mark, I called our Latvian Microsoft support. They said, I don't need TS CALs for Windows 2000 and XP. Also Windows 2000 Server licence agreement stated I don't need CAL for Windows 2000 clients. So, where you found it is gone?

I will try to get something from a licensing specialist for you that is public to reference. (I am a Microsoft employee)

I learned of the end of the grace period about 2 years ago.

I hope you find this post helpful.

I have sent a message to the licensing specialists and will try to follow up.

What I found for you that explains the TS CALS in general is:
Specific to what I was talking about. The magic date is April 24, 2003. Any XP machines purchased AFTER that date need a CAL and I believe that any new installs of 2003 server that are upgrades from 2000 no longer qualify since 2000 is no longer supported by Microsoft.

From the Microsoft web site:

Transitional CALs for Windows XP Professional-based client computers

Because this change in client access licensing requirements affects you as you move to Windows Server 2003-based terminal servers, Microsoft offers a Windows Server 2003 TS CAL for each Windows XP Professional license that you owned before April 24, 2003.

For additional information about these transitional licenses, visit the following Microsoft Web sites:

That is for accessing a Windows 2003 TS...he has a Windows 2000 TS. W2K still utilizes the built-in "free" CAL's for W2K and XP. The grace period was for accessing a 2003 TS from XP.

Also...to clarify...when you move to 2003 TS's, you will have to buy a CAL for every client, regardless of the client OS. For now, you don't need to purchase anything as long as the clients are not Vista and the servers are 2000.

we only have windows 2000 servers as of right now. We will be upgrading in the near future.

If upgrading in the near future it is probably best to add a 2003 member server as a TS server now, handle all licensing and be done with it.
