Hello, we have been upgrading office 2000 to office 2003. Everything seems to go fine, however after the upgrade, users cannot seems to either right click in word, or highlight anything in the body section. Its almost if the message doesnt see the mouse.

When logged in as administrator, there is no problem.

When we log in as the user (who is set up with a local profile), this happens

We have tried uninstalling office 2000 before installing 2k3. We have tried installing with the user as administrator.

We have tried to delete all the old application data in the local user profile.

We have tried copying and pasting from a good profile to a bad one. This includes both app data spots that has MS office data in it.

Any ideas? What we are doing now is completely blowing out profiles just to upgrade office. We have about 150 users left to roll this out to.

Please help.

Microsoft doesnt know whats going on, spent many hours on the phone with them

Anyone know the number to Bill Gates' house??

When you say highlight, do you mean select a block of text with the mouse?

What type of mouse and version of mouse driver do you use?

What printer/printer driver do you use (or are they all different)?

Are all the WSs identical? If so, which graphics card and which driver are they using. If they are all using an Intel integrated graphics chip and driver, make sure that the driver is the latest available from the Intel Driver site.

Yes, highlight, or select a block of text with the mouse. The mouse cursor turns from the pointer into the cursor that looks like a capital I when it is moved over the white body section of a word document. But clicking doesnt do anything, its not recognized.

We have tried swapping mice, updating drivers, using USB mice, using PS2 mice.

The workstations are either all Gateway Profiles 4 or 5, or Dell Optiplex GX620's.

I highly highly doubt that its a printer driver issue. This happens to every machiene whether or not there is a network printer or a local printer.

Same with the graphics cards....all drivers are up to date.

Its something to do with the profile settings. Excel, Powerpoint, Access Etc all work fine...its just Word.

We're thinking maybe its something to do with Adobe PDF maker as well. But like I've said we've replaced the normal.dot files, all the application data folders....and the only thing that seems to work is to compeltely blow away the profile, (and we only migrate the desktop shortcuts and my favorites over to the new profile).

What happens if you start Word in Safe Mode: from Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word starts in vanilla default install condition bypassing all add-ins, Macros and templates. Do you still have the same problem?

Yes, running Word in safemode with the winword /a command does remedy the issue.

That proves it is most likely a third party an add-on or less likely a corrupt normal.dot. Adobe and Symantec are favourite for buggered up add-ins

Check what is in the Word (and/or Office) Startup folder and rename all the .dot templates as .bad and test again. If that works, then rename the .bad templates as .dot one at a time until you find the culprit.

third party add on would only be adobe writer. We do have symantec virus protection too, but that cant be it.

As far as Word and or Office Startup Folder??? Where is that? What are you referring to there?

We have already done the .dot template renaming thing, as one would think that would have to be it.

My collegue wants to try doing a windows "clean boot" tomorrow. He read something somewhere. I duno.

Doing some more tomorrow morning, I will try your suggestions and will post back about how it went.

Thanks for your help

Mike

tf is right. If Word does not have the problem in Safe Mode, you need to check whatever you have in Startup.

As tf suggests it will be MSOffice/Startup, or it could be Word/Startup. Do a search for any folder with Startup. Trace it back to see if it is either Office or Word. Then rename everything it that folder, and put them back (as their original name) one by one until you find the offending item. Odds are that it is an addin there.

If you do not have COM Addins under Tools (it is not there by default), you may want to add that menu item so you can check for COM addins as well. See Help to add COM Addins to the Tools menu.

What about running the detect and repair function in Word. Have you tried that? Just an idea

I hope you find this post helpful.

Well, the upgrade went just as expected. Out of about another 15 or 20 Pc's we had to wipe out about 10 profiles.

It was weird, deleting the normal.dot files undr app data, microsoft, templates.... worked for about 5 of the users. Had no problem in word.

I'm thinking it had to do with how the computers mght have been set up originally with office 2k, and also PDF maker, and also another document scanning program we use called LaserFiche..

Anyways, the detect and repair feature didnt work either

Just one of those things I guess...

We have about 50 more to go....whoo hooo

Think of it as an opportunity!
