I just got a W-C2948G 48 port gigabit switch from ebay

This is the first manage switch I ever got. I didn't know how to setup or do anything with the switch. I just wanted something to load balance my 3 servers and create a VM cluster, didn't know it this is a managed server

I am getting a red light on the status led. Created a console cable, and booted up on HyperTerminal.

I have read a lot of post and I do believe my switch have be missing the OS (There is a old post, but os link is dead). I don't think it is a L3 model, but unsure. If any one think they could determine is it a L3, here is the auction
When I boot on HT, here is what I get, what should I do and could someone upload the OS and romman rom to an online file server please, thanks

Try IOSHunter---it's free. Then Google tftpdnld. That's what needs to happen. But the flash could be corrupt, because of the red status light. The status light IS red in the picture on Ebay...I'd return it if I were you...

Burt

I would return it if I could... but it is sold as is, so I am stuck.

I got IOSHunter, but I don't even know what series should I download. Should I download Cisco Catalyst 2900 Series XL, Catalyst 2950 Series or Cisco Catalyst 4000 Series or other?

What do you mean by flash could be corrupt, it seems that rommon mode is ok, so it should be at least recoverable?

I am really noob at this, is this even IOS or CATos, because I see from that it is a CATos not IOS.

Any help will be great, thanks

It is catos , 2948 is a layer 2 switch . If its going to rommon try this first , it may just be missing the boot statement . Issue a "boot bootflash: " command and see if it will continue loading . It takes a catalyst 4000 series image to use it . It all set based commands to configure it . If its just missing the boot statement when it finishes booting up check the image name "dir bootflash" then issue the following "set boot system flash bootflash:<imagename> " . This sets the boot statement so it will load the next time. I am not sure if you can see the bootflash directory in riommon or not , try a dir bootflash: from the rommon prompt.

Hey Viperegg, thanks for those info.

when I did a dir bootflash:, I see a cat4000.4-5-2.bin, and after continue to follow the recover link to set the ip, the gateway and recover the password. I managed to get to the console prompt. The status led is now green, however I still don't have any link to my router and my existing network. So any links for me to help setup this baby... thanks.

If you have no link then thats a physical layer issue. You can look at all the ports with a show ports command . To look at the config it is "show config all" . This gives you the complete config. If you want to start from scratch you can wipe the config with a clear config all command. Set the boot statement again after doing this . This defaults it to factory specs and it will act as a dumb 10/100 switch with all ports set as auto negotiate. These switches do not use auto mdix so if it is connected to another switch then you must use a crossover cable unless the switch on the far end is auto mdix capable.
Depending on what you are trying to do I can probably run you thru it . Also you can go to cisco.com and just do a search on what you are trying to do . There software isn't free but most of their extensive documentation is so just use the search as you would any search engine on the main cisco.com webpage.

Before wiping the config or even saving it, you may have to set the config type to binary or something...unless that's the PIX...been a while...

Viper---weren't those switches lifetime warranty? Doesn't Cisco have a repository of images for those somewhere?

Burt

Those switches are EOL now and I think there is no support for those now. I don't know of any sites where you can get catos , tfp.cisco.com has a few IOS images like for the old 2924's but don't see any catos images.
