hello everyone,

I took the 291 on Monday and failed of course. I used the Study Guides by Sybex. Did some asking around and someone referred me to the O'Reilly's MCSE Core Required Exams in a Nutshell. I wanted to know if anyone used the O'reilly books and the sybex books and tell which they like best.

But on the exam I had 46 questions, 10 simulations, no subnetting questions.

On the board someone said "know your dns", yes if you don't have DNS down, don't take the exam.

The Mspress Book is good for this exam.

Build yourself a server or 2 (best to use virtual PC or vmware for this if you can, you get a 180 day trial of W2K3 Enterprise with the book) and follow the practices in the book.

Yeah, you have to know DNS.

thanks for the respons, pagy and thanks for the info

dreadz,

You absolutely have to know DNS, DHCP, and several other topics well enough to spot mistakes. If you don't know them that well, reschedule your next exam and spend more time studying.

I know one person who used Mike Myers's Passport series and said that it helped him to understand the material better. Personally, I swear by CBT Nuggets, but everyone has a different style of learning.

Thanks for the response, I will look into your suggestion.

dreadz,

While you're studying, it helps to look upon your unsuccessful exam experience as a learning tool, rather than a failure.

You might be able to turn this to your advantage. You've seen the real exam and now have first-hand knowledge of what to expect the next time around.

Good luck!

Yes, definitely agree. I failed 291 the first time and had more or less the exact same exam second time around! Of course I didn't know it was gonna be so similar but I did brush up on the types of questions I thought I did badly on and I milked it the second time :)

okay I took the 291 exam again, and I have to admit I did not pass the exam. This is the 2nd time. There was improvement but no passing score. I guess I am feeling down because I bust my ass studying and don't know where to begin to study for the re-retake.

Question of the day

What is the highest amount of times you have taken an exam before passing? And what exam?

I know it's not a MS test, but it took me 3x's to pass the Security + exam. Just perservere. Each time you take it, it should show you where you went astray. Keep studying and keep a postive attitude. 3rd times a charm : )

Good luck!!

dreadz,

Having to retake an exam more than once is probably more common than you think. I know some pretty smart people that were humbled by the 70-291.

If they were all muliple-choice/choose one style questions, I probably would have aced that exam.

Your best bet is probably to get some practice exams like Transcenders, and take notes. Brush up on what you have trouble with, and then take the practice exams again. That's what I'm doing now, and it seems to work best.

Hi dreadz,
Sorry to hear about the exam man, gutted for you.
But don't give up, it'll make it feel SO much better when you get the pass you need!
I'm with wishdiak in regards to the transcenders, measure up tests etc, practice practice practice.
If you haven't got access to these let me know ;o)
