Hi
some what new to Cisco config and need some help with a 2811 and 2801 back-to-back in a lab env to demonstrate voip and POTs

So far I have the POTs phone (FXS) configured - I can get dial tone from the analog phone
- but still muddling through the FXO and
- the IP phone was not able get passed "configuring IP" even though it is able to get IP address from my DHCP server.

2 28x1 with FXO and FXS ports (one of them has CME)
2 39xx switch
2 7940G IP phones
I would like to use SIP as the protocol.

here is what the desired layout:

analog ph -- 2811 --T1-(back-to-back)--2801--analog ph
| | | |
(FXO)PSTN --| | | |--PSTN (FXO)
| |

L2 Switch L2 Switch

7940G 7940G

Any help in a sample config for this would be greatly apprecciated! If you are local, I can treat you for lunch! or send you a gift card for lunch ;)

Thanks!

vvoip,

I know IOS boxes can be sip gateways, but i'm not 100% on the protocol - I think you need a sip server. You could probably throw callmanager express on those boxes and place calls to/from each other(would use sccp, just like callmanager). Additionally, you could throw an h323 load on the phones and easily add some h323 config to the routers and get calls to flow.

Let me know what way you'd like to go and I'll point you in the right direction.

One of 2811 has Call manager express on it. I alo have xten on my PC.
The goal is to get the POTs working then the IP phones (on SIP) and I read some hairy experience loading SIP images on the 7940G...any pointers are much appreciated.

the only thing that is really disturbing when loading images to phone using TFTP is that not all TFTP servers are compatible with the phone....

So far I tried over 3 to 4 TFTP server softwares and only tftpd32.280 works with Cisco IP phones.

Thanks. I got that on my PC that !

What I really need help in is the POTS (FXO) and the 7940 config.

I would be happy even wit the skinny version working for now. and I can then upgrade the phone firmware and change the config on the 2811 to support SIP.

Help ??

Thanks!

You need to be careful with SIP.

Firstly you need to upgrade firmware on Cisco IP Phone. Depending on the version of SIP you are using you can not downgrade.

If you put the wrong version on the phone you might aswell throw it away (or sell it to someone using that version of SIP).

Gateways support SIP but you would still need a SIP server. There are tonnes of SIP servers out there and I heard newer version of CM support SIP.

2 weeks ago I rolled out a SIP solution using version 5.3. I used an I3 CIC server (version 2.3.1) and it worked great as a SIP server however I could only work with G711.

I would work out the details first as mistakes can be very costly.

I work for IDL ( and my website is ;)
