I have a 2651XM router for internet access. I currently have 4 serial interfaces connecting to 4 T1's (MLPPP) with same ISP. I need to add a 5th T1. Is there any way to add another serial interface to the 2651XM, or do I need to go to a bigger router?

I've seen something about a Cisco (VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 2-Port 2nd Gen Multiflex Trunk Voice/WAN Int. Card - T1/E1) card with two RJ-45 jacks, but I don't know how that would be configured.

Any thoughts?

Not sure if it's compatible with MLPP or not, but you can use the VWIC-2MFT-T1 cards to handle a regular T1. Basically they're designed to handle a channelized T1 or a PRI, but you just group all 24 channels and it behaves as a single 1.5Mbps T1 circuit (well, two per card). I've running 6 T1s in a 2691 router and it works fine with 3 x VWICs.

Thanks jpm121. I just began to look at that dual interface WIC. How does the numbering of the interface(s) look in the config? Is it seen as 1 or 2 (eg. serial 0/0 and 0/1)?

We show
Serial 0/0:0
Serial 0/1:0
Serial 0/2:0
Serial 0/3:0

and on up from there. The router sequences them and doesn't care about the card configuration.

Here's a snip from the config, showing how you group all the channels together.

controller T1 0/0
framing esf
clock source internal
linecode b8zs
channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24 speed 64
description XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

(This particular router is a point-to-point T1 (DS1) but you get the idea).

Is there a Cisco chart or document somewhere that lists the maximum number of interfaces a given router can handle? I am thinking of installing WICs to allow for 6 T1's to a 2651XM and a 2620XM (which will be my cold spare unit). This could consist of any combination of single or dual WIC cards. Am I able to do this?
