I have two Cisco 2611's connected to full T-1s and I am having CPU problems! My cpu's are both pretty much stuck at 80+ precent. The same routers are only using 9 of 32MB memory. I do have pretty specific ACLs in place (in and out). Can I specify the ACLs to use memory? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

of course they can! when you do sho cpu processes what process uses up the most resources.

excessive acls are also causing performance lacks like slow response, cause the router has to look thru the entire acl when processing in/outgoing packet. that not only slows down the router but also the line speed. try to streamline your acls or think about investing into a firewall.

Thansk for your response... Basically, anything IP is consuming all the resources. What would you suggest?

Thanks!

i am not sure if the high load is caused by your access lists. however, it looks like the router cannot handle all that traffic. check you interfaces for the load.
also try to disable process switching and enabling fast switching (ip route-cache) on the interface.

here is a cisco link regarding high cpu util.

one more thought:

if you have ip route cash enabled, it will not change the fact that extented access lists will still be worked down in process switching. to find out if the access lists are your problem, go ahead and take them off to see if the cpu problem still exists.

First off, thak you very much for your assistance!

Second, removing the ACLs seem to decrease some of the load on the processors however, the bandwidth utilization goes "through the roof".

Is there anything I can do, short of buying a couple of "bigger, bettter, faster" routers?

Thanks again!

how about getting a firewall?
are the users on the site producing this traffic? or maybe some misconfig of the lan, in connection to default routes? you could also do an ip accounting (but not while your cpu load is this high) to see which hosts are the top utilizers..
