I had a problem with the Router coming up only in ROMMON.
loadprog unable to load magic bad 0x0
So I was troubleshooting issued a bad confreg command, then I issued a reset and the characters came back in Higher ASCII fonts and HyperTerminal is unable to do anything except show these strange characters. I need a work around
to bring this expensive router back to life. Thanks for any help.

You have probably changed the baud rate for your terminal connection which is why you're seeing whacky chars. try each available baud in hypertrm to see if you can get some sense out of it,

cheers

Phil, Thanks a million I have a screen I can work with now and this is it. I hope I can return the favor someday.

loadprog: bad file magic number: 0x0
boot: cannot load "flash:"

Hi,
I guess you're still booting to rommon. Issue a 'dir flash:' command to see if there is an IOS that the router can load - If I were a betting man, I'd bet my house there's no files to be seen. So you're gonna have to put an IOS image back on it.
Use xmodem to transfer a suitable IOS from your PC to the router (I'd set the config-register to the highest available baud rate - 115200, << and change your hypertrm settings to reflect the change ;-) >> once its completed (sometime about an hour later!, change the boot settings to the new image and you should be back in business.

Good luck.

Personally I'd use a laptop with TFTP and use the rmon to load the IOS that way. THere are 4 or 5 parameters to set for this but it works very well and it is faster then loading it through the console cable :)

I am having this same problem with a 2611XM. Only difference is that I have an IOS imagine in the dir flash:. I can issue the boot c2600-ipvoice-mz blah blah blah command and it loads the IOS fine. I can dump my config into the router fine and it works. I can write the config as well. When I reboot, it continues to go into ROMmon mode giving me the bad file magic number error. I did a sh ver to tell me what my confreg location was (0xf72c) and it still will not boot teh IOS image. Any ideas? Thanks in advance =)
