256 color images on toolbar?

I have a toolbar that I want to put 256 color images on as icons. The toolbar editor shows the image in 256 color mode but after compiling, when I run, the toolbar shows a sad 16 color version of it.

What's the deal? Any ideas? Is there a 16-color limit to toolbar graphics?

If you attach images to your toolbar in a standard way, you only get 16-color icons. Here you can find a nice piece of code which enables you to use even 24 bit images:
