I am running into this problem with my 2511. It will begin to boot but stop at the point referenced below. Does anyone have an IOS that can fit with these specs? 11.2(20) will be fine...

Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
IOS (tm) 2500 Software (C2500-I-L), Version 11.2(20), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

cisco 2511 (68030) processor (revision M) with 6144K/2048K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID 19605024, with hardware revision 00000000
Bridging software.

2 Serial network interface(s)
16 terminal line(s)
32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read ONLY)

-----------------------------------------------------
I do not see how this could cause this problem but I was trying to configure like this...

!--- Set the default route for the external network.

no ip http server
!
line con 0
transport input all
line 1 16
session-timeout 20

BUT I TYPED LINE 0 16...

Had this problem the next morning.... Will just wipe it clean and start anew... Can anyone help with the IOS???

Is there is reason that I would want to limit to 12.1 or 12.2??? If I am running 16D/16Flash?

Image Name c2500-is-l.123-26.bin
DRAM / Min Flash 16 / 16

This is an IP Plus IOS... That should be good right?

Billy,

No reason to limit it - just determine what you are using it for - if just an access server not sure if you need the top IOS. Try several and see how speed is affected!

About 2 years ago, I tried to load the top IOS with firewall etc. on a 2514 with 16/16 and it was as slow as a PIG :) Went back to a smaller IOS and it ran fine as the lab router it was intended to be!

Just look at the features you need on that router and the role it will play in your lab!

There is also untangle ---like IPCop---haven't tried it, but I have read it got really good reviews. A free download---it works off the Linux Knoppix shell...

I will suggest different rack mount servers for you, real cheap. For now, I'd look into a Compaq DL360 G2, or G3---two hard drives(SCSI Ultra 3 or U320, 10K or 15K, depending on how much $$$ you want to spend), two CPU's, and fairly cheap. Also, two native 10/100 ethernet interfaces.
I scanned the ftp server, and it's clean.

Burt

Thanks Guys.. Will look at those servers now..

Burt, I figured that the FTP was clean. That is what I get for waiting to log in so long...

Thanks Buirt,
The Compaq DL360 are awesome.. Just bought a G2... Need two of them... One for Untangle/IPCop and the other for my toys.. Want to find some time to play with virtualized server apps as well.. Definitely appreciate the info!!!

Billy,

I have run IP Cop on a Dell P3 600 (Dual 600's) and 1 GIG of RAM as well as 4 nics - love it!! I also added the add on Cop Filter - it has an a link on the Add on page. It adds in-line virus checking as well as some other "in-line" protection!

I have my Cisco 2651XM as the 1st line and it feeds my connection to the IP Cop Firewall "Red" network and I have the "Green", "Blue" and "Orange" (DMZ) all hooked to 3 different Cisco 2900 switches - I normally only have the "Green" network on, I do not have anything "setup" in the DMZ yet and I only use the "Blue" network when I bring a strange PC in to be worked on!

I was looking at an IBM P4 Netvista machine for $180 at Tiger that I might replace the Dell with, but for now it runs like a champ!

IMHO, the only thing I like about Dells, especially the older ones, is...NOTHING...lol
I do like the newer 2950s, though...a little...

Burt

Burt,

When I first started at the college we had Gateway 2000 (1997), that was before the new cases - I have about 400 to 450 computers to maintain - on those Gateways it was 18 screws to replace the floppy drive or hard drive - 18 fricken screws :) boy did tech support hear from me - next release had 2 thumb screws :)

I have about 400 to 450 Dells now - they run very nicly and I have no trouble with tech support - get parts next day - students are very hard on the computers!

Here's something you may laugh at...
Got a PIX520 and two Local Director 420s from a customer. I use the PIX, but the Local Directors are fried (flash card). They look exactly like a PIX520. So, I have the PIII and motherboard, PSU, and everything it came with, threw in an IDE hard drive and 384MB of PC100 RAM, hooked a monitor, keyboard and mouse, and I have Windows 2000 Pro on it. So, it looks like a PIX520 or Local Director running Windoze. I'm going to install IP Cop or Untangle on it---now THAT's a hackjob there! Running a different firewall program on a PIX...lol

Burt

Burt,

I almost bought a PIX 520 on ebay to do just that - some of them are getting down in price and it is a nice rackmount case.

I have been in one that a student brought in here and it is an Intel MB - would be perfect for IP Cop or one of the other LINUX firewalls ! And all the connections are on the front where I want to see them. I have seen the PIXZILLAs offered on Ebay where they take the case and upgrade it to a P3 1GIG etc. with a ton of RAM - I guess those are dropping off since the PIX IOS is no longer being updated.

The student wanted to use the 520 for a medical center - it only had the 2mg FLASH card - I warned that I thought he could only get 5.1 PIX IOS on the 2mg card and that PIX was up to 6.3 at the time - not sure if you want to provide an out-of-date firewall IOS for a business solution - I suggested that he do the IP Cop or Monowall - that way he could provide an up-to-date solution! Not sure what ever happened, they did not like that I spoiled the ebay purchase!

I have been reading about Untangle, I have used IP Cop for years - works great and the user interface is easy to use and understand. I have a small memory leak - not sure if it is IP Cop or my hardware, I have a KRON reboot the firewall every night at 3AM, before this it was never a problem, I just noticed that it was using more and more memory each day, I read a "fix" about the KRON that doubled as a security precation in case the firewal is hacked in the middle of the night - hacker would never expect it to reboot :) I am very happy with IP Cop of course I have it sitting behind the Cisco router that blocks most DOS attacks etc.

I loved when we discussed our home setups in a security class that I took :)

I'm installing SuSE Linux 10.0 as we speak...or type, rather...lol

Burt

That is awesome guys.. I would have never even considered installing *Nix on a Pix-520... I am impressed Burt..

Ciscoguy, looks like I will be going to school in for about three months in Pensacola.. Will get in touch with you.. It's not that far away.. Will most likely be moving to Mayport (Outside of Jacksonville) afterwards.. It's kind of cool the people that you meet in this industry.. Will let you know when we visit St. Louis again Burt... I have been there three times in the last two years so should not be too long... Really depends on this school now and my orders...

Oh, By the way Buirt.. My Dell XPS 1530 Rocks!!! LoL It will rock even more once I can finally find a good wireless driver so that I can run Gentoo or something other than Ubuntu...

Glad to see that I have a source for IPCop questions.. CiscoG.. Don't worry.. they are coming.. LoL Actually you should start an IPCop forum at Tek-Tips... I do not believe they have one yet.. It will bring some traffic as IPCop seems to be VERY popular...

Billy---looking forward to your visit...
Take a PIX520 apart---it's a PIII Intel motherboard with a dual serial port jumped in a single cable for the console. It boots to a flash PCI card because in the BIOS it is selected to boot from removable devices. Just take out the flash card, add a hard drive, monitor, keyboard and mouse (the front panel comes off so you have more room to plug all that in). Then you put it back together so it looks like a PIX that runs Linux...muahahahahaha...instant Frankenstein machine!
As far as Linux, you may want to try Fedora Core 5, Knoppix, or even Mandriva. SuSE may even have wireless drivers---10.0 is a few years old already...

Burt

Billy,

Got stopped by the SP on Mayport with a Lt. Commander who was showing me around, we got in a restricted area. You will like J-Action-ville, once you get used to the smell of the timber plants - my buddy said you can smell Jacksonville about 35 miles out at sea as you approach the port! He said after a long sea duty it was a great smell!!!

You have some GREAT beaches around Pensacola, great area!! You should enjoy!!

I want to get a PIX 520 and move my IP Cop in there, some of the older 520s have P2 266s in them, but they all seem to have Intel MB in them. They look to be the same exact Intel MB that Gateway 2000 put in their P2s !!! I love PIXillas or a FrankinPIX :)

Thanks guys,
This should make for an entertaining project..

Burt, SUSE was reknowned for poor wireless support back in the day but I haven't used it in a loooong time.. Knoppix still has poor wireless support or at least that was what I was finding a couple of months back.. I have a LiveCD but can not get the wireless going on the m1530 Dell... First used SUSE to replace a Redhat 7x machine... I first started the Linux path with Redhat 4.2 (I think).. and no, I have never managed to do a Level1? Gentoo install.. LoL Stupid kernel would not compile... machine would sit there for days reading then would just sit there ding nothing... (Without a kernel)... Afther third attempt I attributed it to hardware incompatibility and moved on to a type2/3?? (Binary install..LoL) That very popular Ubuntu signature always annoys me.. LoL (Ubuntu - African for I can not install Gentoo!) LoL... Actually, I think I will give it another shot.. has been a while and I do have a free PC to play with...

OK.. Got the 16DRAM/16FLASH in today!

Flash works fine but the memory was bad! Was listed as Australia but came in directly from Tianjin China and was labeled as "gift". I didn't like that. Secondly it was listed as price $180 (This must have to do with customs.. not sure but I paid $29) All in all I would not deal with this seller again... Will let you know how the return on the memory goes..

Here is the info for anyone who is curious..
