Had a little problem last week, lost the main drive (IDE)didn't figure the slave was injured in the crash, a 250gb SATA. While waiting on a new IDE drive to come in, needed files from SATA, slapped it into another computer, didn't read. Installed new drive and reinstalled SATA. Disk Management shows full drive but I can only access 10mb!
Here's a screenshot of what disk management shows.

rowdyj81,

slapped it into another computer

At this point Windows may have written something to the disk, what was the OS of the slapping PC? Did you have to make any changes in that PCs BIOS to enable the drive?

I would try converting the file system to NTFS, it will not damage your data. If you have access to Partition Magic or Partition Manager software (or any partitioning app) I would examine it. Also, download the diagnostics from the drive's makers and run it.

Download "Restoration" from snapfiles, it may allow you to see deeper into the drive and it's free.

For now you can at least feel a bit proud for fooling Disk Management! [smile]

I would say the FAT has become corrupted so I wouldn't try converting the disk. I'm not sure I would try chkdsk on the drive either. Perhaps search for FAT repair utility? As I have it I would try spinrite first ( but that's me. If I couldn't repair the FAT I would use getdataback.

The one thing I would avoid at all costs is allowing windows to write to the disk.

I have been known to be wrong.
The best way to thank someone who helps you is give them a star.

Thanks guys. The OS in the second system was XP. I've heard that Windows will sometimes mark a drive unreadable when exchanging drives amongst different machines. Unfortunately, I heard it after I did this one. lol.
Honestly, after six days of "tinkering" with the dang thing, and losing valuble work time, I sent the drive to a Data Recovery facility in a nearby "big city".
