Hi all,

I have a couple of 2500 routers that I am playing around with as part of my CCNA training. I have been thinking about what I could connect to the serial ports apart from another router with a crossover cable.

So.........

Would it be possible to connect my linux server if I fitted an appropriate interface card?

If yes, what interface would I need?

Thanks

Jon

You can. Connect the Ethernet0 (E0) (via AUI) to the server directly via cross-over cable, or connect it to a switch/hub via straight cable, then hook the server the switch/hub.

Make sure you assign correct IP for the E0, as well as IP for the server.

Rgds,

Hi AK,

Sorry, I must not have explained myself very well.

I am already using the ethernet ports and everything is working great. I have just connected a 2501 to my 2514 via the async serial ports and that works a treat.

What I am wanting to experiment with is what else can I connect to the routers via the second serial port (not aui) on my 2514. Obviously if I had a T1 line then the equipment on their would connect but as this is a lab setup in my home I dont have that.

Does that make sense?

jonny2495,

I picked up 2 cheap, older Adtran CSU/DSU units on Ebay, connected the serial port of the routers to them and then connected the 2 Adtrans with a crossover cable -

router ---- Adtran ----- Adtran -----router

Not sure - but Adtran had a diagram and a lab at there site when they were a sponser of the Cisco CCNA Network Academy - not sure if it is still up there.

You should be able to Google the wire scheme for the crossover between the 2 Adtran units.

Hope this helps!
