2003 Server File Names Ending With Unprintable Char

Problem: Some Files cannot be copied, renamed, deleted, moved from one volume to another. Attempting to copy results in the msg "Cannot copy <filename>:Cannot find the specified file"

Examination of any of the files that will not copy indicates that there is an extra character at the end of the filename. CHKDSK does not report any errors.

Background: This Dell server is used by both PC and Macintosh clients. It has a Powervault external array. The problem occurs in copying between any volumes.

Question: Does anyone have a fix for this, to remove the spurious character, or to be able to copy/move files names this way?

Were the files created by the MAC clients or PC clients?

I suspect that the files may have been created by Mac clients, but it's hard to tell, as the site is a medical research company that uses various equipment to produce images, and also shares some files between both types of clients. I do not know what applications created these files.

Any ideas welcomed...Regards...Chris

I would see if a MAC client can access the files.

Unfortunately I manage this server using remote desktop so I cannot experiment with a Mac. I do suspect that the files would be accessible this way.

My problem is that I have to move certain approved folders of data to a separate backup volume from whence they are (incrementally) copied nightly to offsite backup. I am currently experimenting with using Windos backup/restore, although this process circumvents the process I tried to implement whereby users designated as 'backup admin users' could do these moves themselves as the files become 'finalized.'

I suspect is has something to do with the mac file format. there are two formats, SMB and I think the other name is AFP but please don't quote me on that. One format allows for Windows clients to be able to access the files while the other is really just MAC. You may need to get your MAC users to convert before you can accomplish your goal, but I confess I know very little about the MAC setup.
