Hi,

Hope someone can help me please. I am trying to set up a home network to learn more about W2k3 and XP. I have an XP machine that accesses the internet through a Linksys router. I installed W2k3 on a separate machine and made it a DC but cannot get it to see the XP machine or router. I have DHCP enabled on the router and have tried manually assigning an IP address aswell as obtaining an IP address automatically. Neither way worked. I cannot ping any machines other than the server itself.

Any help would be gratefully received :)

can you ping the linksys from the server?

Hi Netintruder,

I can't ping the Linksys router from the server.

can you ping the loopback address of the NIC on the server? If you can't ping the linksys (and i'm assuming that your NIC settings are correct of course), it would appear that your network card isn't working right...

When you set the server to DHCP, does it grab an address from the router?

I can ping the loopback address. When I set the server to DHCP it does not grab an address from the router. It sets itself to 169.254.159.90 with a subnet of 255.255.0.0. Are you aware if there isexit a security setting on W2k3 that is preventing me accessing any other NICs?

Do you want your router to serve as your DHCP server or do you want your DC to be your DHCP server? If your DC is able to access the Internet then there is nothing wrong with your NIC. I believed there is some setting in your router that need to be corrected. Here's something I have done before with linksys router that worked for me. Shutdown all your computers including your DC server and your cable modem if you have one. Reset your linksys router and shut it down as well. Then turn on your cable modem if you have one, wait for like a minute or so then turn on your router. After your router is up and appear to be functioning, turn on your dc server. Now try to ping your router. If you can't, turn on your xp client computer and try to ping your router. If you can ping your router try to login to your router's admin page and check the settings.
