When I attempt ot log out or shut down a windows 2000 server the screen goes dim and thats all. If you hit the space bar or anything for that matter the screen goes bright again. The only way we could shut it down is to turn it off at the switch. We do have pcAnywhare on this box

I had the same problem, however I needed to shutdown/restart my server, locally and remotely, so I wrote a little shutdown/restart batch file, which works a treat, i can forward you the info if you like.

email me: clubfx2@hotmail.com

Check the task manager to find out which service or file is not shutting down.

clubfx2, instead of finding a way around the problem, wouldn't you prefer to find out what was causing the problem. The shutting down problem is not normal and you should try to find out what is hanging the server instead of writing a script that will force the shutdown.

However, if you did all that you could and still could solve the problem, then I would agree with the script solution. Nevertheless, I would have to agree with aSugarBe. Try to find the program or service that is causing the server to hang. Do you have any EDI Scripts that run from this server, any scheduled tasks. When did you start having this problem? What new software(if any) was installed on the Server? What was the last Service pack or Hotfix installed on the Server? If you can, try to shut down all other switches except the master switch so that no users are connected, then try a shutdown. Obviously, there is something still running on the server that is stopping it from shutting down, you shuld troubleshoot the problem before settling for a work around solution.

I would have to say this started when I installed the last set critical MS updates. would it be benificial to reapply sp4 or would that nagate the updates that I have applied?

If you are certain that this started when you installed the last update from Microsoft, you should contact them. Usually when this happens they will not charge for support, due to the fact that their update could be the cause.

Give them a call and stick to your guns, stick to the fact that your server was running well until the update was installed, make them liable. From experience, I know that some of the patches that Microsoft releases usually cause more harm than good.

Do not pay for the call, if what you are saying is true then make them give you support for free.
