Have Linksys router with (2) hardwired connections (XP and Windows 2000). (1) XP wireless connection, (1) Vista wireless connection to router. All (4) machines have connection to printer and internet. XP & Win2k can see each other but cant See Vista machine and vice versa.

For troubleshooting purposes All firewalls have been disabled, file/printer sharing turned on. Workgroup name set to workgroup on all machines. Vista has newtwork discovery set to ON.

Downloaded & installed LLTD Responder on Xp machines from the Microsoft website & still problem exists

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried using Safe Mode with Networking on a couple of the machines to see if that gives you connectivity/sharing?

Disabling a firewall is often not enough as settings remain in effect, you might have to remove (temporarily) any third party firewall. Also many anti virus products include hidden firewalling components.

What clues if any are showing in the Event Viewers?

File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista

Let me start off by saying I Hate Vista.

Now, all I did was turn media sharing on and now Vista can see all the computers. However XP machines cant see Vista.

Event viewer actually shows no visible clues.

Have you tried Searching for the Vista computer from XP's search engine to see if it even knows there that it is connected. At some stage you may have to enter a password from the XP machine to enter Vista from it.

It still sounds like your Vista settings are not correct.

Sorry can't add much to your HP Plotter question, HP dropped my Scanner from their Vista drivers list, so at the moment I use XP for scanning.

These are barely related articles and they might not help too much.

How to find a compatible printer driver for a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows

From time to time you can check this site from Vista with your equipment connected, one day someone might fix a driver for it?

CAn you help? Not getting response from other forum and it is related to our discussion. I dont belive it to be a vista issue and some settin ghcnaged to put me inthis current state

All workstations belong to the same workgroup and all have file/printr as a protocol turned off. All firewall off. Any help would be appreicaited. It is a permissions issue definately. Thanks.

Are you using Static IP addresses? Is the Subnet address the same for each machine? Can all 4 machines Ping the Router? Are machines IP's listed in the Router? How many machines are wirelessly connected to Router and how many are wired to Router?

Keep it simple while you are diagnosing your problem, try just any two machines via the Router, and don't add the extra machines until these two are communicating correctly.

Not static IP's. Subnet mask is same for all. Logged into router and all IP's are shwoing up.
Comp1 - XP can see all wrkstations in workgroup
Comp2 - XP, cant see anyone in workgroup except self
Comp3 - Vista, cant see anyone in workgroup except self
Comp4 - Win2k, cant see anyone in workgroup except self
Here
from XP (comp1) I can ping all devices
from XP (comp2)I can ping all except Comp1
from Vista(comp3) I can ping all except Comp1
from Win2k (comp4) I can ping all except Comp1
*there is obviously a pattern but I cant seem to see it.

What is striking is the Comp1 who can see everyone but no one else can see Comp1 or ping. Again they all belong to same workgroup, same protocols. there must be permissions. I will try disconnecting certain units from router but I dont understand how that might help. I could be very woring in that assumotion though. Thanx. I will try. Any ideas based on what I just told you?

I'd say the first (but perhaps not the only) problem is Comp2. There's KB31597, but personally, I try KB318030 first. It might also be worth taking a look at KB903267.

I'm a simple man, and starting off small, with that part fully working before proceeding to the next step is something I would try in your situation, rather than fighting the whole conglomerate in one go.

Sounds a bit like some setting in a firewall is disabling ICMP packets. In fact the whole mess might be firewall related? What firewalls are involved here, whether disabled or not, as previously stated disabling may not be sufficient to prevent interference.

Together you gentlemen (smah & linney) ahve helped solve thins matter for me. Thank you very much!

We are glad that you have solved this problem.

What was final solution? The next person who sees this post might find that bit of the puzzle handy to know?

I say both of you because it was indeed a firewall issue as linney stated initially & smah had a link to micorsoft stating to check router firewalls. So in this specific instance it was a indeed firewall issue within the router. As far as the Vista was concerned, once I installed the Network Extensions for Windows XP the XP was visible. Thanks.
