2 nics and 2 routers help pls

Hey world tech's out there,

I've read most of the forums but still have problems with my network. Dilema:

Server01: 2 NIC installed;
(LinksysRouter) and (Wireless D-Link)

The 'LinksysRouter' is connected up to the cable modem for internet. The 'Wireless D-Link' is going to the laptop so it can get internet.

The setup for SERVER01 w/2nics:
-------------------------------
Linksys NIC: ip 192.168.1.2/ff.ff.ff.00
gateway 192.168.1.1
dns 192.168.1.1

Wireless NIC: ip 192.168.0.1/ff.ff.ff.00
gateway 192.168.1.2
dns 192.168.1.2


The setup for LAPTOP w/wireless card:

ip 192.168.0.3/ff.ff.ff.00
gateway 192.168.0.100
dns 192.168.0.100

*Wireless D-Link Router has ip 192.168.0.100 (LAN)
*dhcp is DISABLED on the WD-Link.
*WAN is set at ip 192.168.0.5/ff.ff.ff.00
gateway 192.168.0.100
dns 192.168.0.100
(is that correct?!)
*in the dhcp part of the router I didn't put anything for STATIC DHCP. but both are disabled.

Internet isn't working for my wireless part but the Linksys is working. I'm pretty sure my numbers are wrong but I don't know where. Please advise on my dumbness. =D Thanks.

Numbers for my wireless part doesn't really matter. so if you have a better numbering system I'll sure try it out.

you have some tcp/ip settings issues. 1. you should enable ip router if you have two NICs. I am not sure if you have done that. post ipconfig /all may help. 2. the dg of the wireless nic on the server should be blank instead of 192.168.1.2. 3. wan and lan on the wireless should be in the different subnets.

I don't know why you setup this way. does the wireless have wire port?

Your wireless NIC's gateway should be 192.168.0.100.

I'm trying a similar thing but simply trying to share a dial up connection. From the host I can see and have access to files on both computers in the Network Neighborhood but from the client I see neither.

Interestingly enough just posting to the thread was enough to get the both computers to show up in Network Neighborhood. I'm now still working on sharing the internet connection (which has never worked). Instead of relying on the host for an IP address I manually assigned them the same as before but then added the host (169.254.191.1) as the Default Gateway. Still no success with Internet Explorer.

I then tried adding the DNS server entries from the Host (204.127.160.1, 12.102.240.1) and saw some action on the network connection icon in the system tray but still no success.

I do have a firewall but it's disabled during all of this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

first, 169.x.x.x ip doesn't seem rigth. if they can see each it may be you have another protocol like netBEUI. if you use ics, the LAN ip should be 192.168.0.x.

Oddly, Win2k first uses the APIA range of 169.254.x.x when ICS is enabled.

And it can work this way. XP does not, it immediately assigns the private range 192.168.0.x. "The TCP/IP-address of your network card is changed to 169.254.0.1 , which has been reserved by Microsoft for a Windows2000 ICS-Host. Also, a DHCP-server is activated for automatically assigning IP-address to ICS Clients."

But if you manually give the future ICS host machine a 192.168.0.x IP, and then enable ICS, it is happy to go along with the scheme, although it does give a small complaint. See the link above.
