I am clueless, please I'll appreciate any suggestion to solve the following problem:

I installed a router connecting two notebooks (wXP and
w2000) to a DSL modem. The first day the
connection was flawless and very fast. But the
following day I had no internet connection using the
router. Actually I had an internet connection sort of, because I can
display google.com or cnn.com pages but I can't click
on a link, I get the following message: IE could not
open the search page. With Mozilla Firefox I get:
“Xxxxx.com could not be found.”

The details are,

I have internet connection without the router.
Modem: SpeedStream 5100a,
Router: Netgear MR814 v2 with the lastest firmware
DSL service is MCI.
One notebook is running Windows XP s2 -this one actually had a wireless coneection working for the 1st day!
and the other one is running Windows 2000.
Both ThinkPads.
There are not software firewalls
running, there is only Norton Antivirus running.
I have scanned both computer with NAV and they're ok.

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Hi bcastner,

Thank you for your quick reply! I have read the FAQ779-4625 before uploading my message, and I didn't think the winsock was my problem because when I login with a dial up connection I don't experience any problems. Am I correct with my deduction?

Thanks,

Andres

I just run Winfix and it seems that it solved the problem. I am amazed! Thank you very much I gave you a star" :)

So do I need to run winfix periodically? What can I do to avoid corruption of the winsock? Any recommendations? Thanks!

Andres

Well, bad news, this morning I have no connection through the router :(

Last night, after running winfix and tweak the system (find my connection very well!) both computers connected to the internet just fine, actually very fast -oh I was soo happy, my wife called me a genius, I explained that we really owned all the happiness to tek-tips...

Now what can I do? Any sugesstions I'll greatly appreciate, I am still optimistic, I now it is a matter of time.

Thanks!

Andres

No firewall at all intalled?

Then malware is likely the issue. Many will corrupt you Winsock stack and other things: faq608-4650

Problem solved!

NetGear router is shipped with the same IP address of the SpeedStream modems --IP address 198.168.0.1

Once I changed the IP address of the router
my problems went away. Now I have wireless and cord connection with both notebooks.

Thanks for your help. I learned a lot.
