Evening all, I took advantage of a generator test for our facility this morning to make a couple of changes to one of my 1841's. When I rebooted, I got this message:

PLD version 0x10
GIO ASIC version 0x127
c1841 processor with 131072 Kbytes of main memory
Main memory is configured to 64 bit mode with parity disabled

Readonly ROMMON initialized
boot: cannot open "flash:"
boot: cannot determine first executable file name on device "flash:"

I'm taking a SWAG and taking this to mena that the router can't read the startup file on the flash card that it's somehow gotten corrupted. Anyone with insight on why this happened and is the router hosed or do I need to get another flash card? Thanks In Advance.

How many times have you tried rebooting the router? Normally this means that the IOS is corrupt, not the flash module itself. Hopefully you have backed up the IOS and the config. If you did, then that is good. If not, then perhaps you have another 1841 with the same IOS, in which case you can transfer the IOS from one good 1841 to the one with the corrupt image. If you need help with this, let us know.

Attempted reboot numerous times, but to no avail. The IOS in both are the same as they were purchased at the same time. If transferring the IOS will help. I'm willing to give it a shot, and I do need assistance. What's the next step?

Hi PhoneTechMan

Sorry, but this may be bad news. Cisco have a known problem with the compact flash cards on some of their current routers. This can be fixed with a ROM upgrade. Details are at but you need to be a registered user on Cisco.com to access it.

Hello
You will have to use the Rom monitor to upload the IOS.You will need a TFTP server.Google for a free server.Install it to a workstation. From Rom monitor use these commands
rommon 1 > IP_ADDRESS=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Temporary Router address
rommon 1 > IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.xxx.xxx.xxx
rommon 1 > DEFAULT_GATEWAY=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
rommon 1 > TFTP_SERVER=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Workstation address
rommon 1 > TFTP_FILE=name of the IOS
rommon 1 > "tftpdnld" This will start the download

Good luck

I have never transferred from router to router, but what Minue has suggested is transferring the good IOS to a workstation, and then from the workstation to the bad router. Run the tftp server program on the workstation and minimize it. Take note of the directory where the tftp program puts files and takes files from. Then connect the good router to the same subnet of the workstation, and then on the good router...
router>en
router#copy flash tftp
and follow the prompts. Then do what minue has suggested.

Thank you all for your replies. As this is service affecting, I'll work on it this weekend. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Try pulling out the CF card, and putting it back in.
I got this error after shipping a router to a remote location. Turns out the CF card was not in the socket right.

Sorry for so long with an update, but it turned out that the CF card was bad, and after a lengthy trail & error learning experience in backing up & transferring the IOS, I had another CF card which I loaded the IOS on, and all was well. I really appreciate everyones reponses and assistance.
