1608 HANDSETS DEAD!!!

I Carried out a maintenance upgrade to 8.1(79) from an older version of 8.1 today which in the main went well, the site had 170ish 5610's and 1608's. The problem I've had is that a few of the 1608's are now dead. There is an activity light on the poe switch and when you plug the phone in you get a flicker of light on the display then nothing. This is a rather large site so can't be sure if these handsets were interrupted in mid flash upload as I did have an issue with one switch which seems to have most of these handsets on it. That switch also has working handsets too and is now working fine.
My question is, can these handsets be rescued? Can the firmware be flashed back into them?

Any help greatly appreciated!

I've seen this, they aren't the best quality handsets and something like an upgrade can break one that's been close to breaking already. 95% of the time you're ok but occasionally it happens. Oddly taking them to another site, like your test kit can bring them back to life, sometimes not

Thanks for the response, first time this has happened to me after loads of upgrades! I suspect these handsets may have been interrupted during the flash upload.... Also unfortunately I don't have a test kit to hand....

I have to agree with amriddle, I have seen this too, especially one site with about 120 of them has to replace 5-10 phones every time they have to shut down the Network switches as they just die with the symptoms you described.

Soon they have them all replaced and they are good as some series seem to be worse than others

There was a firmware on these around 6.1/7.0, 1.300 I think, that killed handsets on a reboot. We had a site just like that Westi. Most sites you don't see it as the switches stay up, but these guys were doing lots to the network when they first moved in. Everytime they reset the switch, anything between 0 and 20 handsets would die. 1.300B seemed to fix this and not really seen it since.

When this happens, you get exactly what you describe. Is there a chance these still had old firmware on???

To answer your question though, from what I have seen, these are not recoverable and need sending for repair. Avaya did release a PSN about this firmware issue. I used to have it on my desktop as we saw it quite alot, but deleted it a while ago.

Thanks guys. I may have an unhappy customer on Monday by the looks of things. I'm holding out for a miracle cure from scansource! Most of the handsets were 1.300b but a few were earlier. I had an issue with one switch showing a fault so I quickly checked that most handsets had finished updating before restarting it. I'm suspecting that those handsets that were in a different area may have still been updating!

If the kit was on 8.1 they shouldn't have been on this firmware but you never know!!

It was on 8.1(44), I upgraded due to some issues with the ip phones and there was such a variation of firmwares that I'm not sure what has gone on there.... (Only recently started going there)
