I need to install a piece of software on a Windows 2000/Citrix server (service packed and patched) and I keep getting this error:

1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime.

I've tried all the obvious things like rebooting the server, disabling AV software and updating the Windows Installer, made sure it was registered etc. I have searched high and low for a solution but have been unable to find anything.

Has anybody had any experience with this problem? If so do you know how to fix it? (short of a re-install)

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi

I had same problem on a few machines lately and sorted it by looking at the event logs, they should give you some indication of the problem. The software I was upgrading was originally installed via a mapped drive that wasn't mapped anymore I worked out. I just mapped the same drive letter to the same folder and the upgrade worked. (Via the new, different mapped drive..)

Yours is unlikely to be the same solution but the event logs should help all the same.

It's ok, sorted it.

It was two problems causing it. I needed the latest version of InstallShield and I was installing over a mapped network drive, which doesn't work properly. When I used the UNC path instead of the mapped drive it then worked.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

I'm getting the same error when attempting to upgrade Symantec SMS for Exchange version 4.5 to up to version 4.6 on a SBS 2000 machine. I extracted the setup files to c:\download\server\.

I spoke with Symantec support but was told that it was a Microsoft Installer related issue and that I had to call Microsoft for support with this particular issue. Even though I pay for Gold level maintenance with Symantec.

Here is the related Symantec knowledge base document ID:

Any help is greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm being screwed by Symantec.

Thanks,

Nick

UPDATE, I found the solution.. in the feedback box on the symantec site I checked "NO, this did not help" and provided the following:

No, you are not providing the solution.
I had this error and the solution was given in this MS Article which you should publish here as a service to your customers:

My solution was to rename the c:\program files\common files\installshield whatever to .bak (deactivating the folder) also in the registry renaming the installshield folder to .bak then per the MS article I typed msiexec /regserver I didn't even have to restart, after that I ran setup and it's OK.
