Hi all. Firs of all, sorry if this is not professional enough, but i drives me insane very soon. My boss asked me how to do this. I've just started here and knew nothing about Pagemaker then (am not half-bad at Photoshop, so the interface was familiar from the start). Anyway, I have been studying tutorials and books on Pagemaker, but this challenge cross my mind as a tad tricky, and made me ask myself why not even Pagemaker 7.0 has done something about this.

Anywway, my boss made a 2x pages masterpage template with 15x2 tickets, and he wants Pagemaker to add the numbers automatically, with "00" in front of them up to 10, then one zero, like "034" I haven't figured out that part either yet.

I have searched the web, but I can only find tutorials on how to make up to 10 ticket numbers on one page, and it works nicely that way. But how can I make Pagemaker (we have 6.5 and 7) count past 19 when I use he auto insert (Ctrl+Alt+P) command? It adds the number 1 automagically, and I have no idea how to change this, so I am forced to start with 11 and end wih 19 !

Sure, we could just print 10 tickets each page, but it would be expensive throwing away all the paper.

Anyway, I am not even sure what exactly to look for. Have checked numbering prefs in document setup and all that, found a PDF tutorial from a "cheapest tricks" contest, and it helped a bit. If only somebody could tell me how to achieve numbering 15 tickets on the masterpage! I don't mind printing the first sheet with 10 tickets using he tutorial method (Ctrl+Alt+P, add the number 1 through 9), but we simply cannot afford wasting that much paper when it comes to the rest.

I would really appreciate it if anyone can help me, my job will get easier by this too. Everything that I can learn about Pagemaker will make my job easier (will never get too easy though hehe ;-). I look forward to be able to share my knowledge when I get some worth sharing.

Thanks in advance everybody, and have a pleasant day.

Greetings,

Hi, webfire,

If you're going to use PM's page numbering faciltiy then I know of no other way than to have ten tickets on one page, which I think is what you're considering.

The usual method is to set up several publications, each with the appropriate number of leading zeros and end digit. E.g.
00RM0 00RM1 00RM2 00RM2 00RM4 00RM5 00RM6 00RM7 00RM8 00RM9

I recall in the dim and distant past that someone wrote a script to generate the numbers, but that's all I can recall.

If you have a Compuserve or AOL account (an AOL IM messanger name with do) you could surf over to and search out the old PM lags who are stil there and ask them in either "1. General DTP how-to", "2. Adobe products" or "8. Desktop printing"

Hi John, and thanks a lot for your time, I appreciate that. Just as I got home from work yesterday, I figured out the only solution is most likely numbering them up from 100 and then just do the 1 through 99 manually. It is a lot better than having to do it all manually, anyway. My boss used to do it that way (by hand) ;)

It simply looks like Pagemaker 7.0 does not support this kind of usage, whic I think i is a shame, really. This is a semi-regular customer, to become regular, and if we have to do thousands of of these tickets, it will be time consuming nonetheless. I like Pagemaker despite of this, though, coming from Photoshop, I love the interface in general and feel quite at home with it.

Sorry but I do not have an AOL account, by the way. I hope I will be able to pick up the how-to of scripting in Pagemaker, it could turn out to be a timesaver after all.

Thanks again, I always appreciate it when people step in and spend some of their time helping others out.

Sincerely,

Håvard (aka Webfire)

Wow! Thanks again, appreciate it! I was at their website, but didn't think of the scripting forum, I really want (and need) to get into that. Thanks again! :)

Sincerely,

Håvard
