Have a OPTION 11C 2.5/CALL PILOT 2.0
APPROX 300 DIGITAL SETS-MAINLY 2000 SERIES, SOME 3000 SERIES
Thinking about upgrading to rel 5.0 in both cases.
A CS1000e R6 has been recommened. don't have a good
cabling structure ip phones. want to use M2000 sets
and gradually change them out. Plans are for a new Admin
building within 3yrs, which of course will be cabled with
a structured cabling system.
Call pilot giving touble, also need to add a cabinet for
more digital lc's
Not sure which would be best way to go?

Actually if you want 'future-proofing' you should be looking at getting SIP down the road. R6 would be recommended - too bad you don't have good cabling :)

What's wrong with using your current cabling for your PCs?? If you need a phone in an area without PC you will just need to run a new Cat5 or Cat 6 line :)

Really at this point there is not much reason to stay on TDM if you are 'upgrading'.

Current cabling is a mess.Oringinally was cat5/cat3 workstations (2 voice/data per office).The offices
were overfilled with workers (eg 2 more desks). The person
looking after the network, just added switches and long
patch cords all over the place, even going from one office to another. To rewire the old building would be very expensive.
Would the 2000 series sets work on the cs1000e in a like for like upgrade of equipment and software?

I didn't think they were even offering 5.5 as an upgrade option any longer?

You may have to go CS1000E TDM to support your digital sets. It does give you the capability of going VoiP sets or even SIP sets in the future, but I have a 5.5 system running 2008, 2616 and the 3900 series phones.

The Product Compatibility Matrix states that all Meridian Phones are supported on the CS1000E R. 6 (Even that old piece of junk the M2317) But understand that the M2000 series phones are MD and no longer sold by Nortel. You would have to get them after market.

Hope this helps

I'd go ahead and upgrade to a CS1000E R6, along with a upgrade to CP 5.0, which is the only way you can currently go and be supported by Nortel/Avaya. Build into your upgrade costs ISMs for IP and SIP if you can convert some TDM licenses into IP - easier and probably cheaper to do now than later, your M2000 phones will still work, and you can play around with IP and be ready when you move. If you have failures, purchase M3900 phones off the secondary market to tide you over until you can move to IP.

Thanks for all your tips, very helpful and informative

In theory you can still use your 'crappy' cabling structure with IP phones - you may just need power injectors that run about $50 each where you don't have PoE switches :) Least you wouldn't have to be 'expensive' and re-cable everything where you already have 2 data ports per cube. And you won't lose any data connections because the hub is built into the phone.
Avaya Aura is out now and that is where things are heading soon.
