Hello, longtime lurker here and first-time poster...couldnt find my answer anywhere and Tek-Tips usually has the answers so here goes...

We have some Avaya 1140E phones with 1100 expansion modules...the expansion modules have the external power supplies so the backlights are working, the problem is they don't timeout like the 1140s do (set at 5sec). Is it possible to get these 1100s to also have their backlights timeout at 5secs? The manuals say their backlights are "firmware controlled" whatever that means...The contrast of the 1100s is syncronized by the same display settings on the 1140Es but the backlight timeout does not syncronize

Hopefully there is someone on here who knows these units backward and forward and can help me out...THX!

BTW..the Brain is a BCM 50 with firmware version 10.0.1.52.176

All I could find out for you about the backlight issue was near to the bottom.

There is a potential failure scenario when IP Phones are deployed using both Power over Ethernet (PoE) and the local AC power supply at the same time to provide power to the IP Phone. Although dual power input is not a recommended configuration across an entire deployment of IP Phones, it has come to our attention that some customers have used this approach as part of their deployment strategy. It has been observed that providing this dual power input can result in damage to the phone in some
scenarios.
Phones that are powered with both PoE and the local AC power supply at the same time will function normally and pose no safety hazard, but are at risk for damage in scenarios when the AC power fails and is restored.

Expected Scope
Note that this dual power input issue has been observed with the IP Phone 1120E and 1140E only at this time.
Further investigation is ongoing.

Recommended Action
We advise that customers avoid using both Power over Ethernet and local AC power supplies when designing and implementing IP Phone deployments. This dual power input approach is not a recommended configuration for network-wide powering strategies.

Note: One previous exception for dual powering is when using the IP Phone 1100 Series Expansion Module (EM) with backlight mode enabled with the IP Phone 1120E or IP Phone 1140E. Local AC powering is required for the IP Phone and EM for the EM backlight to be on, and for this configuration it is advised to power the IP Phone and EM using the AC adapter only.

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

The backlight seems to be controlled by the firmware only (i.e., it does not look like the BCM software actually configures it). I just configured my 1140E phone with a 1 minute timeout for the backlight (using Preferences - Display Settings on the phone). Both the 1140E phone and the attached KEM turn off the backlight at the same time (after 1 minute). In other words, the backlight on my 1140E and KEM is synchronized.
My guess is that the 1140E firmware has to send some kind of a message to the attached KEM to turn on/off the backlight. Maybe the firmware in your 1140 does not send the "turn off" message correctly. What firmware version do you have on the phone(s)? I have 0625C8G (not the latest, but reasonably recent).
You can quickly find the version number under Local Diagnostics - IP Set Information. If your 1140 firmware is old, you might consider upgrading these phones to a newer firmware release.

Thanks gentlemen, I will try powering only with the AC adapter and if that doesnt work, try updating the phone's firmware..I will post what I find

I have an 1140e with 2 sidecars and the backlight always shuts off at the same time as the main phone. I am using AC adapter only with the phones network connection plugged into a non Poe Baystack. I do have newer firmware though. Yes, please let us know your results.

Ok, sorry it has taken so long to get back on this..just tried taking it off the POE and running it off the AC adapter only and it still doing the same thing, haven't time to do the firmware update right now but will update when I do, best regards

Okay, just got a chance to work on this issue today. Weird...I discovered that about half of the 1140e phones connected to the same BCM that have the 1100 expansion module work fine with the expansion module's backlight syncronizing with the main units backlight. The other half have the same problem as my original post, I cannot find a difference in settings or firmware between the ones that work and dont work. Still seraching for answers...any other suggestions?
