Hi,

I am on OCP track - just finished my first paper - however now I am thinking if it will be worth completing OCP(9i) as Oracle 10g -seems to need no DBA, therefore maybe there'll be no need for upgrades.I have not looked at 10g fully but the features promised by oracle seems to say to organisations -->'you do not need a DBA anymore'.What is your opinion?

M,

I infer from the lack of responses to you thread that amongst the 89 of us that "Oracle 10g" forum watchers, we are still "learners" and not yet "pontificators" on new 10g topics. Since none of the others of us have made an assertion on your thread, it appears that this is an opportunity for you to become an expert on this topic and advise the rest of us.

I'm looking forward to seeing your follow-on posts since the answer could affect the livelihoods of many of us. (Frankly, it's about time that Oracle reduced the "voodoo" envolved in managing its databases. -- from a DBA).

Thanks for your contributions to the "Oracle 10g" forum.

Regards,

The job of a dba is going away only if you think that the only job requirements are to make sure redo logs are sized appropriately. Right now, I'm working with some dbas to install oracle collaboration suite -- so now, the dba group will be responsible for installing, tuning, and maintaining a web application server, a database-based file system, enterprise e-mail, voice mail integration, on and on.

Oh, then dive into the database -- I'm just starting to understand analytic functions, and now there's this model clause...

I work for Oracle and the trend in DBA requirements was put to the VP taking the 10g role out presentations last year.

To managers the message is this: you wont need as many DBA's

To DBA's: you will have the ability to focus on more strategic roles and move away from general production support issues.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. The ability to spend less time on production related administration will mean the role of a dba will become more project and strategic. Doing so will mean less personel will be required to fullfill organisational requirments.

The effect to DBA's? Short term, more BDA's going for the fewer roles. Long term. A broader breadth of skills and DB's come become more solution / technical architect roles.

hi Oceansoul,

So this means there is no real benefit in pursuing Oracle DBA related certifications?

thanks.

Not at the expense of DOING something with 9i/10g. I'd much rather talk to someone who can talk intelligently about their experience implementing a 9i DB with a transparent gateway to MSSQL, and about the recovery scenario from the major fire they had last year, rather than four hours of detailed discussion of use of bulk insert straight out of the documentation.
There's always some benefit to certifications, but that's not going to be "enough" forever. It's what you've done, and how you *do* things, think things through, lead a group through design and development, make the right choices, that makes all the difference.

The database of the future will require two DBAs: a person and a dog.
The person will be needed to feed the dog.
The dog will be needed to keep the person from messing with the database.
