Hello, I urgently need help

Our backup exec 10d for SBS 2003 is not working right.
They guy who set it up quit, and now im trying to figure it out.

I think he may not have set it up right him self.

Here is what I want it to do.
I want it to do differential.
I want it to be bi weekly (i have 2 disk drives, ill use one 1 week, the other the next)
So I will have 2 jobs.

I want Monday to be the full backup, then Tuesday-Friday to be the differential backups. Then on the next monday the other job will run on the other disk the same way. Then the next week the first job will run again overwriting the old contents.

I think this is how i want to do it.

Ive got my removalble backup devices mounted in 10d.
Should i delete the media sets and start over?
How would i go about accomplishing the above?

thanks for any help GREATLY appriceated!

If no one responds to this during the day, I can get you through this this evening when I am on my SBS on home. hang in there. In the mean time, if you have to run a backup, you can do one thorugh NT backup and send it to your external drive.

Sorry about not getting back to you as I said I would (no excuses). I am hoping you got it going, but if you haven't or if others are looking for assistance, here it is;

Because you want to run the job on two different drives, you'll need to create you media sets first. This way you can specify which disk each job can write to. I assume you are backing up to a file location, so follow these directions to configure backup to folder options;

- Go to Tools, Wizards, Device Configuration Wizard
- Click Next until you get to the Detected Backup to Disk Folders screen
- Click to add a backup to disk folder and enter the needed information. Name the disk something logical so you can tell which one it is,
- When finished, run the Add Backup to Disk Folder wizards again for the second disk.
- Finish the Device Configuration Wizard

Before you can create the backups, you will need to set-up your backup to folder options as their own media sets (this will control where your backup goes)
- Go to Tools, Wizards, Media Set Wizard
- Start going through the options, naming the Media Set something that tells you which disk it is (based on the name you gave it)
- The Overwrite Protection Period is a technical and personal choice. Technically this is determined by how much space you have. If you tell this to not overwrite, your backups will work until you are out of space. This is also very important in that you are making a full backup on Monday and then differential backups the rest of the week, so you need at least that much space. Let’s say you have the space to hold this backup and the differentials for 2 weeks (weeks 1 and 3). If this is the case, set this option to 3 weeks. I say 3 weeks (and perhaps others will disagree) because you do not want to have it available until it is ready to run again, but you also do not want to overwrite the media too soon either. Instead, you will append to the previous backups (in the next step).
- The next step is the Append Period. Make this Infinite, so you can always add to this media set.
- When finished, run this wizard again for the second disk,

Now, you’ll need to create four backup jobs. There will be two jobs for each week and one set for each disk (alternating weeks). You’ll do these next steps two (once for each “week”; where I say <disk>, use the disk for whatever week you are in.
- Click Backup to start a new Backup Wizard
- The first option is selections (this is under Properties, in the left pane); select what you want backed up
- Next, go two options down to Resource Credentials, and test the credentials you have in VERITAS (this is really important if you changed the Admin password when the employee left and this is the account being used)
- Next, go to the Device and Media properties, and this is where you choose the first media set you created in the previous section. This says that when this backup runs, it will only write to this specific backup to disk folder. The other default options in this section are fine to leave as is.
- Next go to the General Settings options. This is where you can name your backup so you know which one ran, failed, or is giving you grief. Once again, name this something that makes sense, like Week 1 Full Backup. Under Backup Method, we want to choose full here because this is the backup that will run on Mondays.
- The other options under setting can be configured for your particular installations (like Domino, Exchange, etc)
- Configure Notifications at the bottom so you know, when this backup runs, did it succeed or fail.
- Last is the fun part; the schedule. Since this is the first full backup you are creating, you’ll want to choose Run According to Schedule. The schedule details should appear allowing you to choose Week Days. Here you want to choose the Mondays it will run. Choose the 1st, 3rd, and 5th. Here is where you have to make a decision as well. If there are five Mondays in a month, you are going to have a problem with the overwrite/append settings if you are low on disk space (provided disk space in your media set is even an issue). The media used in the fifth Monday will be the same as the one used the next week for the 1st Monday next month. If disk space is not an issue though, this will not be a problem as the backup will just be added to the media.
- You can click OK and then Submit the Job.

Now that you have the first job created, use this job as a template for the others. Go into the backup set again and create a new backup. This time, when the initial backup window opens, choose to Load Selections from Exiting List and load your first backup (you can choose to replace the current set since nothing is there). No we can make the following modifications to create the differential set for the first week.
- Because you chose the first backup job as a template, all of you selections are fine; you just need to change a few options. First, go to the Setting General Properties, and make this job Differential – using archive bit. Also rename the job using the same name, but change Full to Differential.
- Next, go to Schedule, and then choose Run According to Schedule. This time, go to the week days and select Tuesday through Friday of week 1, 3, and 5.
- Click out to save and submit the job.

Now we have to create week 2’s backups. Go back to Backup and once again, create a new backup based on the first week’s full backup job.
- The only changes here will be under Device and Media, General, and Schedule. First, choose device and media and replace the first media set you used with the second weeks media set you created.
- Now, go to the General tab and rename the job replacing your first week’s designator with your second week’s designator.
- Last, go to Schedule and following the previous steps from above, set a weekly schedule of the 2nd and 4th Monday each month. Submit the job.

The last step is to copy your weekly differential setting from week one to week two. This should be second nature by now; just adjust the media, name, and schedule and submit the job.

Hopefully this guide helps you solve your issues. I would recommend using a backup tape drive, but if that is not an option, backup to disk is better than nothing. Also, if you have the disk space, you may consider implementing Volume Shadow Copies on your shared folders on the server and deploying the Shadow Copy Client to your users. This allows you to restore a file or folder that is in a shared folder on the fly. It is also a lot faster than using VERITAS to restore one folder (we all know this happens).
Let me know if you need any more assistance and if you have any questions on what I presented here.
