A bit off-topic, but it's a damned shame men can't (easily) carry purses, what with all the gear we are expected to have with us: wallet, cell phone, pills (for the over-40 set), organizer/Palm, etc. On jobs, we can carry a tool bag and stuff everything in it, but you don't want to wander in to Subway or the bank with a tool bag. And yes, we have pockets, but have you seen how big some wallets get? I saw someone at Costco the other day with a wallet that was literally 1.5 inches thick. I don't know how the guy folded it.

I have to carry my Palm organizer to fight CRS. Perhaps it's all those pills.....

I've seen it somewhere, just can't remember where thought...the man-purse.

But isn't that was a brief-case if for? (Yeah, I don't have one of those either).

I take it you guys never saw the "Seinfeld" episode where Jerry is encouraged to carry a fashionable shoulder bag/carryall for men. He must resort to saying, "It's not a purse! It's European!!" But wearing the fur coat, another accommodation he makes for a friend, ends any effective defense.

Is that the episode where George's wallet explodes, from putting too much stuff into it?

I assure you, you don't want to carry a purse!!! My kids use it as a trash can, as does my husband, my husband grabs all my paper money out of it (I get th 60 pounds of coins! Your hands are never empty, and worst of all you allways have to be on the lookout for someone trying to steal it. Large pockets are fantastic!

Hello all,

I ws wondering if any of you good folks can help me. I am looking for some formal training on wiring. (home networks, Cat5, simple ethernets). Need to get some education as the job market is getting very difficult.

Thank you kindly

lamasu, you need to start your own thread if you expect to get answers.

I don't know, I might be able to find some information in the bottom of my purse, if I ever find it! Mike Meyers has a network+ book out I've been told it's pretty boring, however he's usually on the right track.

THere are a certain number of tools that i just figure i can't afford to be without. I'm a tool whore, so it's usually not a problem to buy a spare. I'm sure there are at least 3 tone generators, 3 inductive tracers, a couple buttsets, etc. in various bags and drawers in the van.

With hand tools...I have an agressive policy. If i can't find it, i almost always stop what i'm doing and go buy a new one or at least get one at the end of the day. Oh yeah, of course now i have spares. I can almost guarentee that I have more than six Klein 10 in 1 screwdrivers (tool belt, tool bag 1, tool box, tower/climbing harness tool bag, glove box) and the other essentials for me (sharpies, side cutters, snips, punch down tools, strippers, etc). It is a bit crazy I admit, and i may have to check a place or two, but if you needed to metric allen wrench sets I could produce them.

I recently did a similar thing, couldn't find my favorite usual inductive tracer, immediately ordered another one and grumbled about the price. 4 weeks later i was back at a communications site on a hilltop when the snow melted and there it was. 30 minutes of drying in the oven on low temp and it's good.

Tools Rule!

Anyone seen my Krone punch down tool (or the replacement?). Last seen in the vacinity of a BT engineer.
Also can someone find our Fluke Network analyiser? Or the box of 100 cat5 cables, the contents of my hard drive or my sanity (last seen several years ago)

The other half bought me a key finder that when you whistle it beeps, one problem....can't whistle !

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

I think they should install one of those Onstar tracking devices with the tone generators and probes. I went on a job a few years back and was trying to trace out a cat 3 4 pair. I knew what closet it went to so that wasn't the problem. I just had to trace the cable. I went on my way thinking this was going to be one of the nice and easy ones. I spent about 20 minutes in this closet and still had not heard a tone. My first thought was that my battery was low so I did the ole, “put the probe up to my ear trick” and still not tone. I finally got mad enough to go back to the room where the tone was at and low and behold someone stole it before I even got to the closet. Now what is someone going to do with something they do even know what it is???

Probably sell it -- college kids are notoriously short of money (at least mine is) Keep your ear pealed you'll most likely hear about it, or maybe offer a reward ($5) if it is returned, and state no questions asked. Just put up a sign that says reward, don't put the monetary amount on it... in all fairness, someone might (although I doubt it) have picked it up by mistake....

Good luck!

Keep trying no matter how hard it seems it will get easier

When you get to be my age CRS evolves into CRAFT, then you need a leash on everything.

One lesson I learned long ago...Never let an apprentice borrow your flashlight or other tools to do attic work...

I did have to have a homeowner call my cell phone several times to locate it in the attic...a word to the wise, put it on RING instead of vibrate when you go into confined areas....

Continuing the purse/fat-wallet sub-thread here, I just received a billfold from It's 1/4 the thickness of any other wallet I've had (except for a few I made out of FedEx envelopes.) The material is thin sail cloth. When folded, credit cards are in 2 stacks instead of the usual 1, resulting in an overall very thin profile. One could easily stuff 20 credit cards in this wallet, and it'd still be thinner than some empty leather wallets. Price is very nice, too.
