What to I need to do when my cpu says 100%. Do I need a new processor, more memory or what?

You need to find out what's hogging the processor. Go down to the task bar. Right click on an empty bit, and select Task Manager from the popup menu. Click on the Processes tab and click on the CPU column. Be prepared for this to take a while. You can probably make a cup of tea between mouse clicks.

If you feel safe in trashing the offending process, select it, right-mouse-click, and select End Process. Otherwise report back here.

Cheers, Mike.

Thanks for your reply to my post. I use Task Manager a lot. That's how I know it says 100%. Most of the cpu usage is with MusicMatch. I download tons of stuff and already have 30 thousand songs. I also am letting the World Community Grid Agent use my computer. I normally show between 34 and 40 processes but don't know which ones I can get rid of. Do you think more memory would help?

I also am letting the World Community Grid Agent use my computer.

tell me about this. offhand i would say that if you are allowing access to you box then a lot of people are hitting it and if you allow downloads then that takes resources also.

i normally have 45 + processes running and only 4%-6% cpu usage. take a look @ your port activity and see what is going on.

I think letting the World Community Grid Agent is a good thing. You might want to read up on it. I don't get any spam-type stuff from it. or through it. Maybe when I'm trying to download more music I'l just exit from "World" and that should help. I still wonder if it's because of the capacity of my cpu or else the fact that I could use more memory. I have 512.

just read up on it and found:
The point is, most of you already have your computer on. To increase the CPU usage from 5% to 100%...

Let me put my own vote in for distrubted computing projects.

I do the Folding project on my main workstation, DCC on another. I admire those doing the SETI project.

Distributed computing projects are just a great idea.
