Hi,

I was wondering, if anyone knew what can cause a 100% CPU usage. I have just installed Telus Security Services, which offers antivirus, firewall, parental control, and when it is running, it eats up my cpu and raises it to above 90% of cpu usage.

Thank you,
joesil

erm, ANY program will cause a 100% cpu usage...

the point is, if there's only 1 program running, then the processor will be totally devoted to that process, but if, and only if, there are more processes, then multi-tasking steps in to split the processor time...

I mean, what would be the point of having your cpu running at lower than 100%? Why not save money and get a slower processor...

Check with that software for updates and patches. I ran into that with sybases sql. Found out that they had a seperate patch for my version called an EBF disk (emergency bug fix) and that fixxed my problem.

Not many computers run at 100% CPU all the time. Intensive tasks may push it up to that level occasionally but it should not remain at that level indefinitely.

Malware is another possibility as is a conflict between programs or processes.

XP SP2 Firewall maybe running at the same time as your Telus Firewall?

How much RAM do you have? What is the speed of your computer's processor (Ghz or Mhz)?

Have a look in your Event Viewer for any other contributing errors.

Some "intensive" programs can run at 100% CPU usage. I normally run at 2% to 3% usage. I used to run the SETI background "scanner". It would run at 100%. But since it was supposed to only run when the computer was idle, that was OK. In jsilveira's case, since the program is supposed to run in conjunction with other programs, I would contact the "Telus Security Services" and see if they have an answer.
