hi

I dont know if it s a hardware problem , or just a software configuration i need to do,

the thing is im not very advanced with pc's, so laymans temrs would be great when explaining anything for me thanks !

the thing is!

My friend and I are both on a the exact same braodband package, his when he checks his online status reads 100.Mbps whereas when i check mine it's running at only 10.Mbps

what might be the problem here for me.

thanks alot

For years, ethernet was 10 Mbps, but in the mid 90's 100 Mbps was designed and in the late 90's 1Gbps was designed. The current work is to get 10Gbps ethernet working. Depending on the age of your ethernet card, it might be able to do 10 meg, 100meg or 1 gig ethernet.

Very few of us are blessed with broadband over 10 meg anyways, so the higher speed are most apparent for local traffic in you local network, not for Internet traffic.

Assuming you have Windows, Device Manager would tell you which ethernet card you have, you could Google on it's capabilities.

If you are hooked to a home router make sure your pc nic card is set as auto for speed and duplex and not hardcoded to say 10 meg .

VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adaptor is what comes up in the device manager

ps., my pc is just over a year old, it was brand new.

Well a Rhine II is capible of 100 Mbps, what is it plugged in to? The name and model number at the other end of the ethernet wire?

um you mean the box?
its an alvarion

model #: 0334b5555

is this the thing u need to know about?

its like a lil power unit with the wires coming out of it :)

Both the RhineII and the alvarion can do 100 Mbps, so you may wish to check the Advanced settings for the Rhine II, and if there are any settings for the alvarion check those as well.

Again, it is likely that the wireless is 6 Mbps or less so 10 Mbps may not be a bottleneck.
