Here's another 0xD1 query and how to fix this problem of Setup stalling as it "Setup is loading files" changes to "Setup is starting Windows".
Then we get this BSOD with:DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
etc.
And Technical info:0x000000D1 (0x00000028,0x00000002,

I've been toiling to get this Windows XP Pro to do a clean install for three months but to no avail.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction to install this successfully?
I've tried things like: underclocking,Fdisk and format and three/no partitions, basic cards/FDD/HDD/CD-ROM/IDE/SCSI/6graphics cards/AGP/PCI/ISA,also various selections/setting for memory sticks PC100 from 250-750 Mg and PC66 from 125-250 Mg on this gigabyte GA-6BXDU MOBO
with two Intel Pentium III 450 Mhz processors.
Also updated the BIOS and cleared the CMOS RAM/ROM and fitted new battery.
The puzzling thing is that another similar Computer is working fine on this O.S.,also an even older GA-686DLX is working fine too on this O.S.
Yours thankfully and looking forward with eager anticipation

Have you tried using 1 memory stick at a time to test. Usually those errors are cause by bad memmory, not just memory settings.

Oh yes,I've done that and tested my memory after finding
DOCMEM20 memory checker software which I downloaded from as a result of quite few searches using key words in and the memory seems to have good bill of health with no faults-it took a while with 750 Mg.
I seem to recall as a result of these searches in google.com I came across a list of what these stop errors
might mean in and following the links of special interest to my problem it leads me to where they seem to admit to a problem in this area and put out fix around Feb. this year but that is not much use to me if I can't get the O.S. installed in the first place.
If I phone Microsoft I find they Quiz you a lot and string you along until you give up with them in desperation when they tell you to refer to your supplier and they of course tell you to buy a new MOBO etc.

If you want to try a "long shot" and a "guess" to get this install done have a look at "ACPI" and "Standard PC" settings.

To change to standard pc during WinXP setup, when it says to press F-6 to install third party......, press F-5 instead and then select standard pc when asked.

This link will lead you to further research on this matter.

I'm very appreciative of mikecx and linney showing their
interest and giving help in this problem.
I will try linney's suggestion too which I understand to be an alternative method of installing this Windows XP Pro
using what I believe is the HAL-Hardware Abstraction Layer
method and involves pressing F5 as you've said. After a little waiting we are offered a range of choices in a Window.
You can guess from this that I've tried this and thought every thing was going fine until at the end we get a problem with a file called:FRAMBUF
After putting in a search in google.com they ask you if you have got the spelling correct and no results are offered. Then go through all those expensive books I've accumulated to find Scott Mueller's "Upgrading and Repairing PC's" 12th ed.and look in index/glossary/appendix to find a ref.to Frame Buffer which hints something to do with bits per pixels in memory and number of colours that can be displayed etc. This leads me back to Google with a new seach-Frame buffer/Framebuffer to find a we are inundated with things that tell me that we are at the cutting edge of all these problems with graphics cards and their memory limitations with all these faster'n faster games etc; but not much good for solving this immediate problem.

I tried all those suggestions and the same problem occurs.
Any more ideas for resolving this. It looks like a new motherboard c/w new processor/s,and DDR's

Is this a multi processor set up. I notice you mention "GA-6BXDU MOBO with two Intel Pentium III 450 Mhz processors"

You should also make sure that you are running the correct HAL. For example, Compaq has their own 'driver' for running multi-processors.

Windows 2000/XP Installation

Recommended BIOS settings
ACPI (Advanced Configuration & Power Interface)
Windows 2000 uses ACPI to assign/share multiple PCI card devices to one IRQ. ACPI should be Enabled, prior to initial installation of Windows 2000, because enabling ACPI after Windows 2000 installation will have no effect.

APIC (Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller)
Normally, leave this set to the default = Disabled unless running a non-standard PC, such as a MIPS or Compaq or multi-processor PC. If enabled, you will need to press F5 at the very beginning of setup (i.e. before the request to press F6 to install SCSI controller drivers).

If Windows NT sees two storage controllers (e.g. a RAID controller in addition to the normal IDE controller), it will try to add HAL versions for both controllers, get confused and lock at the “Setup is starting Windows 2000” part of the DOS-like file copying. To work around this, press F5 at the very beginning of Setup (before the F6 request for SCSI controller drivers); F5 presents a list of computer platform choices, reflecting single vs multi-processors and proprietary offerings (e.g. MIPS, Compaq vs standard PC). These appear to call differing kernel compiles; so, these choices are very significant.

· ACPI Multiprocessor PC

· ACPI Uniprocessor PC

· Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC

· Compaq SystemPro Multiprocessor or 100% Compatible

· MPS Uniprocessor PC

· MPS Multiprocessor PC

· Standard PC

· Standard PC with C-Step i486

· Other

The “Advanced Configuration and Power Interface PC” option worked well for me e.g. on an Abit KR7A-133 with a Highpoint 372 RAID chip.

Set PnP OS to Disabled in the BIOS, prior to Windows 2000 installation.
