007MLM ports lock-up

After years of service with no problems, a 007MLM is locking up it's ports. A VM Reset from the front of the board reboots the board and all is well for a while. If done in the morning, all 6 ports will be locked up by the end of the day or by the next morning. System has about 70 VM boxes and AA for after hours.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this and how to correct? Is there a way to see what the ports are connected to or to release them from the attendant console?

Well it sounds like you have a HARD DRIVE Problem, and it's time to either get another one, or upgrade to Merlin Messaging.

There are not many places you can obtain hard drives for this unit, but I do know of a source.

Of course, not knowing the release of the Legend in service, (Must be 7.0 or Magix) it is difficult to know just how easy it would be to bump up to the Merlin Messaging. Given the chance though, that's what I would recommend to my client.

Thanks merlinman,

Do you know if the hard drive content can be transfered from the old drive to the new or is it a total rebuild? The MLM is a 2.0. The Legend is a R7.0, V9.0.

In looking at the error log, there were a high number of instances where all TTRs were unavailable. There were only 4 TTRs for a full 3 cabinet system. Thinking that this could be part of the problem, I had the customer add a spare 012 board to an empty slot last night to give them 2 more TTRs. So far so good this morning. Do you think that a shortage of TTRs could cause the VM ports to hang?

merlinman,

The 007MLM finally just faded away and would not boot. I replaced it with a Merlin Messaging R4. Everything seems to work fine now except when I try a backup to the port card. The backup starts and I hear the message that the process can take up to 20 minutes. Several seconds after receiving that message, the backup aborts with error code 2. I'm not having any luck finding error code definitions for Merlin Messaging. Any idea what error code 2 is about?

I would NOT try a backup to the messaging port card - because it can only back-up a bare minimum of information. The Merlin Messaging R4 has an Administration software package you can download from Avaya.com and install on a computer. Also download the instructions for configuring the computer's IP address to match the merlin messaging - and use a LAN crossover cable. You can then connect to the messaging and do a "real" backup - meaning not only the configuration - but all greetings, mailboxes with their contents, etc. You can also use the software for programming the messaging system much more easily - then from a phone.

Your error code 2 - indicates that the Messaging Port card is not a "genuine" port card - meaning it does not have any backup capability (missing a few chips). But - it's really not much of an issue - since the information that can be backed-up on the PCMCIA card - is minimal (it's only a 4MB card). Basically all it has room to back-up is the mailbox and AA configurations and maybe the AA greetings - depending on their length. Using the Administration software provides you with the best way to do a "true" backup - of everything.
