Thanks for your responses, guys. The problem was that the box was actually on its last legs. Probs with motherboard, fans, cpu,, I managed to clean up the hd, took it out, bought a Pentium iii running Win2000 and everything is back to normal, no crashes at all on any of my machines.

We have tried not one but two usb webcams, one a labtec webcam , the other a generic usb webcam on our Win98SE computer. The cam seems to work for a while, but when contacting friends on Yahoo or MSN Messenger(s), the screen freezes and we get a variety of vxd messages followed by a blue screen...
Thanks Ski,
I followed your trend of thought and discovered that it was my Kapersky anti-virus monitor that was clashing with the hp scanning software. I probably forgot to unload the anti-virus monitor when I installed the scanning software. I'll do a re-install of the scanning software and...
I have just bought a USB HP PSC 1300 all in one printer for my Win98 SE computer. It prints and copies just fine, but whenever I try to scan a picture or document, I get the message "Unable to communicate with hp scanning software".
I have re-installed the software, but to no effect. Any...
I have an older computer which I was running Slackware 7.1 for 3 years. Against my better judgement I decided to install Slackware 9. Well I have been srtuggling to get my modem going. I setup and isapnp.conf file, and have started testing interrupts. When I reboot the box, I see that ISAPNP...

Another option might be getting the apsfilter script from freshmeat.net.
It does a super job at installing a printer, including setting up the /etc/printcap file. It can be run in console, and its real easy to setup, and it supports a lot of printers.
Hope this is of some help

This was never a problem until last night while...

Any assistance would be appreciated
Thanks guys
I tried Opera way back, maybe its time to have a second look. As for Galeon, one of the requirements is Gnome > 1.20. Well I don't like Gnome or KDE (too bloated) and the version of Gnome that I have installed is < 1.20, so I guess I will have to decide
if its worth upgrading for...
