So i went ahead and tested the psu but somthing stranged happened.I followed these steps

1st i tested the 12v line on the PSU's motherboard connector and the meter ran from 11.8 and descended 0.01 in about 25...
thx steve,but whats the difference with all connectors disconnected and the psu is (in or out of its case?)...surley its the same

I have been reading up a bit about testing the psu with the meter and just have a couple of quistions.
is it best to test the psu free from case(all connectors disconnected)or with connectors in place?
any tips or good links that could help me??

I tried with only the M/B connected,nothing.
I think ill go buy a multimeter and see if its the psu.

edfair,when you say unplug all but the M/B,am i rigt in saying that there should be only two connectors running from the psu to the M/B?
just want to make sure im doing it right.
Just noticed that when the pc is unpluged for a lengh of time and then repluged...

update...
according to the hp site my sup is probably fine...i disconnected all power cable connectors from their connectors on the motherboard and from the back of internal devices,pluged it in and the led light was solid no flicker or click.
btw i think it was the led making the...

I went away for a few days and turned the computer of normaly,then removed the socket from the wall..
Got back yesterday,pluged it in and its dead!! there is a flickering green light(at the back)under the power supply cable but no other sign of power anywhere...theres also a continuous...

the shop agreed to send the monitor to hp...but they also said that they think a power serge caused the problem and if so, i must pay the cost of the repair!!
just wondering if anyone thinks this was a power serge that caused the problem?

I googled networking and it sounds a little to complicated for me...I need to get a large amount of data from this laptop(I dont have admin rights) to my desktop(which has no monitor)lol...any ideas how i could do this?
ok...found it but it seems a lot bigger than a normal connection...I'll do a little more researh.
btw do you know if its possible to burn data from the lap top using the desktop burner
